I’ve searched for an audio book – how do I download it?

After you search for an audio book you will have a list of all books that match your criteria. Select a book title to reveal the book information and the Add to My Library and Download buttons. The Download button adds the book to your Downloads. The Add to My Library button adds the book to My Library, where you can download it from at a later point in time.

How do I find Advanced Search?

By selecting the Basic Search button you will switch to the Advanced Search screen where you can search by keyword, title, author, subject, book number (formerly CD number), category, interest and language. You can even search by narrator, using the author field. Select the Advanced Search button to return to the Basic Search screen.

Can I browse all audio books within a genre?

Yes. In Advanced Search, select the Category that you would like to read (e.g. Biographies), and then, if you want to filter this search further, select the Subject Interest (e.g. New Zealand Biography). You do not need to enter a keyword to make the search work.

Where can I read a summary of an audio book I’m interested in reading?

Select the title of the audio book in the Search results, My Library or Downloads screens to reveal the book information, which includes a book summary. This will also display the length of the book and any relevant series information.

My Library

Applies to: Audio Books, Youth Library, Newspapers, Audio Magazines

What is My Library?

My Library is where you can ‘hold’ library content that you are thinking about downloading. You don’t have to download all of the titles in My Library. A title will stay in My Library until you choose to download or remove it.

How does My Library work for serial titles (Audio Magazines and Newspapers)?

When you place an Audio Magazine or Newspaper in My Library, you are placing the serial title there rather than a specific issue of that title. Placing your favourite serial titles in My Library allows for easy access to download, as future issues become available.

I can’t find my titles in My Library

The different content types on BookLink have separate libraries. You have an audio books library, a newspapers library and an audio magazines library. To access the audio books in My Library you need to be in the Audio Books screen. To access newspapers in My Library you will need to be in the Newspapers screen. To access audio magazines in My Library you will need to be in the Audio Magazines screen.

Why isn’t there a Read Now button in My Library?

My Library contains a list of titles that you would like to read. However, the titles need to be downloaded before you can read them. Select the Download button to download a title. This will move the title to Downloads where you can select the Read Now button.

Downloads

Applies to: Audio Books, Youth Library, Newspapers, Audio Magazines

What is Downloads?

Downloads lists all of the titles that you currently have downloaded on your device. You can read any of the titles listed in Downloads.

I can’t find my content in Downloads

The different content types on BookLink have separate Downloads. You have an audio books downloads list, a newspapers downloads list and an audio magazines downloads list. To access the audio books in Downloads you need to be in the Audio Books screen. To access newspapers in Downloads you will need to be in the Newspapers screen. To access audio magazines in Downloads you will need to be in the Audio Magazines screen.

Will I need an internet connection to read library content?

You need an internet connection to download content. But once titles are downloaded onto your device, they can be read without an internet connection.

How long will it take for my title to download?

This depends on the size of the title and how fast your internet connection is. In the case of audio content, BookLink will first prepare the relevant files for downloading. This may take a minute or two. When the title starts downloading, BookLink will display the size of the title and the percentage of download completed. It will display a message Download Complete when the title has finished downloading. Text content is much smaller in file size when compared with audio content, and therefore text newspapers are much faster to download than audio content.

How many titles can I loan at any one time and how long can I loan a title for?

There is currently no limit to the number of titles you can loan at one time, nor is there a limit to the length of time you can loan a title for. You will however need to take into account storage on your device. You have a limited amount of storage on your device so you will need to return/remove titles in order to loan more. Note that when you download a latest edition newspaper, it will overwrite any old edition of that newspaper in your Downloads.

How do I return a title?

The Return button is available in Downloads and Now Reading (in Advanced Player mode). In Downloads, select the title of the book you wish to return, which will make the Return and Read Now buttons available to you. Select Return. In Advanced Player, the Return button is in the bottom left hand corner of the screen. Returning a title will delete it from the storage on your device as well as removing it from your Downloads. Note that newspapers cannot be returned. Instead, they can be removed from the Downloads screen.

Can I access Downloads on more than one device?

You can download BookLink on to any number of iOS devices; however they will work independently of one another. E.g., if you download two books on to your personal iPhone, when you access BookLink on your work iPhone these books will not be available to you.

Can more than one person use BookLink on the same device?

Yes. However, if both people loan the same title and one person returns the title before the other person, the title will be returned for both people. This is because there is only one copy of the book on the device. If one person downloads the title, when the next person tries to download the same title, the device will recognise that the book already exists and not download it again.

Now Reading (audio titles)

Applies to: Audio Books, Youth Library, Audio Magazines

What is Now Reading?

The Now Reading screen displays the audio title that you are currently reading. It shows all of the player controls to play, pause and navigate your title. There are three player modes: Simple, Standard and Advanced. To change between the three modes, select the Mode Changer button. The button displays/announces the mode that you are currently in, e.g. Simple. The button is located in the bottom right hand corner of the screen.

Why are there three different player modes?

Different people prefer to have access to different functionality. Some people want to be able to perform lots of different actions whilst reading an audio title, others just want to be able to play and stop a title and don’t want the screen cluttered with buttons they don’t need. The three different player modes enable you to choose the player functionality that suits your needs the best.

How do I use the Bookmark feature?

You need to be in Advanced mode in order to use the Create Bookmark feature in an audio title. You can add bookmarks by selecting the Bookmark button (which is represented by a bookmark icon). Once you’ve created a bookmark, it will be available to you from the Chapters and Bookmarks list (audio books) or the Articles and Bookmarks list (audio magazines). These lists can be accessed from the Chapters/Articles button on the player in Advanced mode.

How do I use the Sleep Timer?

The Sleep Timer function is available in Standard and Advanced modes. The Sleep Timer automatically stops an audio title from playing based on a predetermined time that you have set. You can choose to stop a title after it plays for 5 minutes, 15 minutes, etc. The Sleep Timer means that if you fall asleep whilst reading a title, it won’t continue to play until the end. If you wish to de-activate the Sleep Timer, select Off when in the Sleep Timer screen. If you wish to leave the Sleep Timer screen without making any changes to the current set up, select Cancel. When the Sleep Timer is on, the amount of minutes selected is displayed in the top right corner of the Sleep Timer button.

Can I skip forward and backward by a time period rather than by chapter (Audio Books) or article (Audio Magazines)?

Yes. You need to be in Advanced mode to change the skip interval. Once in Advanced mode, select the Skip Interval button. You can choose to skip forward and backward by one chapter/article, five minutes or one minute. Once you have set this, the next time you use the Skip Forward and Skip Backward buttons, you will skip forward and backward by the predetermined amount.

Can I read more than one audio title at a time?

Yes. Whilst you can only have one title open in Now Reading, you can read any of the titles that you have in Downloads. Select the title that you would like to read from Downloads and it will move to Now Reading. If you go back to Downloads, you can select another title to read. If you choose to go back to the first title that you were reading, it will remember where you got up to last time you read it.

Why does my audio title skip backward when I switch on my device?

If you switch off your device without pausing the audio title first, the title skips back to the last point it was paused. It is recommended that you pause the title before switching off your device.

Now Reading (text titles)

Applies to: Newspapers

Why don’t I have the same functions in Now Reading in Newspapers?

The newspaper content is downloaded in a text format, not an audio format. This relies upon the user to use VoiceOver to narrate the newspaper text. Changes can be made to VoiceOver in your device settings, such as speed and dialects.

Can I search through newspaper headlines?

You can’t search through newspapers. But VoiceOver users can use the item chooser. This is activated by a triple two-finger tap (tapping three times with two fingers). VoiceOver announces that there is a search field where you can search through the headlines of the newspaper.
