Chicago Auto Show is venue for MotorWeek Drivers’ Choice Awards
America’s favorite automotive television show presents 2003 top 12 in the Windy City
BALTIMORE - It’s been nearly a decade since PBS’ MotorWeek, America’s longest-running automotive magazine show, has been presenting its Drivers’ Choice Awards to the world’s auto manufacturers at the Chicago Auto Show. The awards themselves, a 21-year tradition, reflect not only the best in the auto industry, but taste trends among American consumers of automobiles.
“The Chicago Auto Show is the right place to present the Drivers’ Choice Awards,” said host and executive producer John Davis. “It’s the venue where more people who actually buy cars come to see what’s new than any other auto show in the U.S. Chicago is the consumer’s automotive showplace and our Drivers’ Choice Awards are designed to help those consumers make informed decisions.”
This year’s list, 12 different categories with a “Best of the Year” distinction, promises to demonstrate the cyclical trends of the buying public and the industry’s response to it.
“The Drivers’ Choice Awards are also about the life of the industry – its ability to respond to the public’s wants and needs” said Davis. “Our awards pay a great deal of attention to automotive trends, what’s hot, what’s not, and above all, what gives the consumer the most value.”
The award list will be released Wednesday, February 12 during media day at the auto show.
Last year, John Davis presented Nissan “Best of the Year” for the Altima during the ribbon-cutting ceremony marking the opening of the Chicago Auto Show to the public.
“We appreciate the opportunity to work with the Chicago Auto Show organizers to make the Drivers’ Choice Awards announcement a special occasion,” said Davis.
The annual MotorWeek Drivers’ Choice Awards are selected by a team of 10 judges, comprised of writers, producers and the crew of MotorWeek. Judges’ decisions are based on superior performance, technology, practicality and dollar value. MotorWeek test drives more than 150 cars and trucks annually.
The Drivers’ Choice Award trophy was created by artist Dennis Simon, whose automotive illustrations have been seen on the pages of Road & Track, Sports Car International, Automobile and Vintage Motorsport magazines. Simon’s commissioned trophy design evokes the passion of driving, an underlying principle of the Drivers’ Choice Awards.
John Davis is an Emmy Award-winning producer whose work has most recently been honored by the International Automotive Media Awards (2002, International Society for Vehicle Preservation). He and his MotorWeek team were honored for “Best of Video” for an alternative fuel vehicles special. In addition, they were given a Gold Medallion and four Silver Medallions. He has been recognized with a Distinguished Achievement in RV Journalism Award (2001, RVIA), a Golden Wheel Award (including Grand Award) for best in automotive journalism (1999, Detroit Press Foundation) and a Silver Dome Award for First Place in “Best Special Program & Feature” (1999, Illinois Broadcasters Association).
MotorWeek producers are Dave Scrivener and Brian Roberts. Head writer is Dave Durso. Davis is joined on air by automotive consultant Pat Goss and feature reporters Craig Singhaus and Jennifer Khasnabis. MotorWeek has been bringing automotive news and insight into living rooms around the country since 1981.
