Course Description:

Introduction to Engineering Design is a course designed for 9th or 10th grade students; the major focus of IED is the design process and its application. Through hands-on projects, students apply engineering standards and document their work. Students use industry standard 3D modeling software to help them design solutions to solve proposed problems, document their work using an engineer’s notebook, and communicate solutions to peers and members of the professional community. There is not a lot of homework required for this class, however, students will be responsible for completing projects by an assigned deadline and sometimes this may require additional work and/or research. Students that use their class time effectively will have no problem keeping up with the pace.

Grading/Evaluation Criteria:

|Category |Type of Task |Weight |

|Daily Assignments |Formative |20% |

|Quizzes/ Activities |Summative/ Formative |30% |

|Tests/Projects |Summative |50% |

Class participation is required in IED. Playing games, surfing the internet, etc. while in

class is a violation of the district AUP (Acceptable Use Policy) and will result in discipline referral.

Classroom Procedures:

Good behavior is expected at all times. Disruptive behavior, such as talking, playing, and being out of the assigned seat will result in parent notification and/or the student being sent to ISS.

There are few rules in my classroom:

1. Be on Time

2. Be Prepared

3. Be Respectful of yourself and others

4. BE PROFESSIONAL

Unless immediate measures are necessary, the consequences for disruptive behavior are:

1. Warning

2. Phone call/E-mail to Parent

3. Referral to Guidance

4. Referral to an Administrator

Modes of Parental Communication:

PowerSchool

The entire school district uses PowerSchool. Parents should check their students’ progress regularly. Parent usernames/passwords were issued during registration. If you did not receive this information, contact the school. This is a very effective way of keeping up with your child’s progress.

Computer Software:

The CAD (Computer-aided design) program we will be using is called Autodesk Inventor 2013 and students may download it for free! However, it requires a computer with adequate memory. Please check system requirements before you attempt the free download. You should also download the content center. Downloading the program is NOT mandatory, however many students enjoy working on their own projects at home. There are many activities that students may want to pursue on this website.

The Website for Autodesk is: .

Extra Help Tutoring An Engineering lab will be open during ILT if students would like to come in to work on projects. Any other time will have to be arranged with teacher in the Engineering lab.
