Dear Parents,
After reading the book “The World Is Flat” by Thomas Friedman, one could surmise that we as teachers and parents need to ensure that our students are well equipped for the many technological changes in their future. They already have (and will continue to have) a significant advantage and accrued multiple capabilities by virtue of taking the Technical Drawing/Design class, and we need to encourage them to continue to pursue this edge. No matter what they aspire to for a profession, the success of their careers and livelihoods will depend on their technological literacy (by the way, there are seven technological systems). Across the globe, the level of technology and innovation will continue to increase and become more sophisticated, emphasizing the increasingly important role it will play in their lives. One of the ways your son/daughter can continue staying sharp, developing potential and pursuing their edge is by engaging in summer “engineering/design/architecture/tech” type of activities. Please peruse the many activities your son/daughter can and need to participate in. They are all technology/design/engineering/innovation related. As William A. Wulf, President of the National Academy of Engineering has stated, “engineering is great preparation for many careers. Consider that 22% of Fortune 200 CEO’s have a BS in engineering. In fact, engineering in the most common undergraduate degree among the fortune 200 CEO’s”. We all want the best for our children – please encourage your son/daughter to help them achieve their technological/innovative potential. Best wishes for a great and productive summer! ▪ To explore the possibility of studying architecture, design, engineering, innovation/creativity, and to help determine that this is the area you would like to study in college.
▪ To discover and develop your skills and capabilities through college-level coursework, using a variety of tools, materials, techniques, and experiences.
▪ To develop a body of work for your portfolio for admission to college.
▪ To meet other students who share your interests and to sample the college experience.
Here’s a list of required summer reading and activities for students in the Advanced Technical Drawing/Design classes. Students will submit and/or present their work on the 1st day back – it will count as the first graded assignment. Extra credit will be granted if an approved additional book (w/completed summary) and/or activity (w/documentation) is completed.
Level 2 students: complete each of the four sections. (Bonus: Complete Sketch Packet – sketch daily)!
_____1. READ/RESEARCH (15 pts.) - Read an article from one of the following and complete a summary:
"Architectural Digest", or “Dwell”, or "House Beautiful", or "Popular Mechanics", or “MAKE Magazine”.
_____2. DRAW/DESIGN/CREATE (35 pts.) - Download Inventor (free version from AutoDesk) and work through
the online tutorials to learn how to create architectural, engineering, mechanical, and industrial design type
objects. Then, design and create an object (concept car, gadget, product) of your own. Be creative.
Graded on degree of difficulty. Secret: Work for at least 20 minutes a day - everyday!
_____3. BUILD/CONSTRUCT (40 pts.) - Construct a 3 dimensional object (full size or scale model) of something
you’ve seen in a book or a magazine (e.g., a building, structure, chair, tower design, etc.) out of cardboard,
foam core, wood, balsa wood, or mat board. Secret: Start building no later than the 4th of July!
_____4. EXPLORE/ENGAGE (10 pts.) – Attend a summer and/or pre-college program (in engineering,
architecture, design, CAD); OR visit 1 or 2 college campuses to obtain information and a sense of perspective.
Level 3 students: complete each of the four sections. (Bonus: Sketch Daily! industrial design; product design).

_____4. EXPLORE/ENGAGE (10 pts.) – Attend a summer and/or pre-college program (in engineering,
architecture, design, CAD); OR visit 1 or 2 college campuses to obtain information and a sense of perspective
about the school, OR contact a local architect/engineer/contractor/computer firm for a summer internship.
Level 4 students: complete each of the four sections. (Bonus: Sketch Daily! industrial design; product design).

A. READ/RESEARCH - Go to the library/bookstore and read the book “Rising Above The Gathering Storm: Energizing and Employing America for a Brighter Economic Future” (2007) by the Committee on Science, Engineering, and Public Policy (COSEPUP). Complete a summary. (level 2, 3 & 4).
B. READ/RESEARCH - Go to the library/bookstore and read the autobiography of Richard Feynman, or bio on Thomas Edison, or Nikola Tesla, or Sir James Dyson, etc. Complete a summary. (level 2, 3 & 4).
C. READ/RESEARCH - Go to Pat Catan's to buy and read the latest issue of "Airbrush Action" magazine. Complete a summary. (for level 2 only).
D. READ/RESEARCH - Watch an HGTV-type show such as “Green Home ‘10”, “Design Star”, "Before &
After", or "Divine Design". Complete a summary. (for level 2 only).
E. READ/RESEARCH – Read "The Five Regions of the Future” by Joel Barker and Thomas Erikson, OR
"Form, Space, Order" by Ching, OR “Eco Architecture” by Fisanick, OR “Green Architecture” by Taschen. (level 2, 3 & 4).
F. DRAW/DESIGN/CREATE - Download SketchUp (free version from Google) and learn how to create architectural, mechanical, and other everyday objects you might see in the kitchen, garage, or around the house. Then, design and create an object (house, concept car, gadget, product) of your own.
G. DRAW/DESIGN/CREATE - Head outdoors and freehand sketch a detailed 2 pt. perspective of your house or car, or sketch an indoor perspective of your kitchen or great room, with detail. Marker render and/or airbrush color to your illustration.
H. DRAW/DESIGN/CREATE - Brainstorm, invent, and sketch out new ideas and useful products.
I. BUILD/CONSTRUCT - Click on and explore all the different ways to make
interesting items. Try to build one or more of the projects posted and improve on the design.

CLASS SUPPLY LIST REQUIREMENTS – TECHNICAL DRAWING/DESIGN & D-MAX
1. At least 2 No. 2 pencils. Everyday. Pens are prohibited.
2. College-lined looseleaf notebook paper (ripped, spiral-bound paper will NOT be accepted!)
3. New 1.5" binder (No retreads, trapper keepers, multi-use, or soft bound). Binders with the
plastic windows to insert a cover design are preferred – required for level one students only.
4. Masking tape (.75” wide), metric (mm) rule, red/blue pencil.
5. Utility knife AND an “X-Acto” (hobby knife - #11 size) – required for level 2, 3, & 4 students only.
6. Jump Drive – 5GB or higher.
7. Also, complete Summer reading/activities assignments for level 2, 3 & 4.

In 2009, the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) and the National Research Council (NRC) proposed three principles to guide K-12 engineering education. One of these principles was that K-12 engineering education should promote engineering habits of mind, which represent values, attitudes, and thinking skills associated with engineering. Engineering habits of mind include:
• Being creative
• Working, communicating, and negotiating in teams
• Adopting optimistic (growth) mindsets when problem solving and designing
• Thinking not only about individual technologies, but also about how the systems within those technologies operate
• Considering the ethical nature of engineering and its products
It appears that gaining an appreciation for and experiences in engineering habits of mind apply to just about any kind of career one might decide to pursue in the future.

The Westlake High School TechMates Club exists as an outlet to discover, develop and showcase the many talents, capabilities, and aspirations of the future architects, engineers, designers, makers, inventors, builders, and artisans of our school. It will help prepare you for the challenges of a dynamic world by promoting technological literacy, leadership, and problem solving, resulting in personal growth and opportunity.
Among the numerous contests, competitions, and activities students participate in include Halloween Fun Night, the Airbrush Action Excellence Competition, Student Model Home Design Contest, OTEEA State Conference Schools Exhibits competition, Westshore 3D Design Contest, Goodyear STEM Career Day Rube Goldberg Challenge, Gravity Racing Challenge, Northeast Ohio Science & Engineering Fair, Verizon App Challenge, Hyland Innovation Showdown, Stuck at Prom Contest, robotics competitions, Norwalk Summit High School Nationals, as well as service projects, field trips, internships and scholarships.
Our hope is that if you choose to participate in the TechMates Club, you will experience the incomparable feeling of accomplishment, pride in excellence, and an enhanced confidence and self-esteem after a job well done. Along with developing a positive attitude and pride in our club and school, you will assuredly carry over these values and capabilities toward future success.
