Bullous Pemphigoid is an autoimmune disease, which causes the skin to blister. The blisters can be large, measuring up to 3cm across, and may be itchy and painful, they appear mainly on the trunk, arms, and legs. Occasionally, the inner lining tissue of the mouth, mucous membrane tissue, can be involved. This condition is not infectious. The majority of cases of Bullous Pemphigoid occur in people 50 years of age or older. The condition can resolve with topical cortisone creams but sometimes requires high doses of steroids taken internally. Severe Bullous Pemphigoid can also require immune-suppression drugs.
