How To Decorate a Microsoft Word 2003 Document with Watermarks and Borders

Microsoft Word 2003 includes watermark effects and attractive borders to enliven your documents. Watermarks and borders can be used when designing stationery, invitations, greeting cards, certificates, newsletters, brochures, and web pages. The following instructions explain how to add watermarks and borders to Microsoft Word 2003 documents.

A. Adding Watermark

1. Open a new blank document

2. Go to the “Format” menu

3. Go to the “Background” sub-menu

4. Go to “Printed Watermark”

Note: If you want to create a picture watermark, see B. If you want to create a text watermark, see C.

B. Adding Picture Watermark

1. Select “Picture Watermark” in the dialogue box

2. Click “Select Picture” in the dialogue box

3. Select your picture from a file

4. Set “Scale” to either “auto, 500%, 200%, 150%, 100%, or 50%” in the drop down menu

Note: The bigger the percentage you set to “scale,” the larger the picture will appear. The smaller the percentage you set to “scale,” the tinier the picture will appear. However, if you set “scale” to “auto,” Microsoft Word will automatically customize your picture to a perfect size.

5. Check the box located beside “Washout” in the dialogue box if this affect is wanted

Note: If the box located beside “Washout” is checked, your picture will appear to be more faded, compared to if the box located beside “Washout” is not checked.

6. Click “Apply” in the dialogue box

C. Adding Text Watermark

1. Select “Text Watermark” in the dialogue box

2. Set Text in the dialogue box

Note: Either you can choose text from the text menu, or you can enter your own text.

3. Set Font in the dialogue box

4. Set Size in the dialogue box

Note: Either you can choose a size from the size menu, enter your own size, or choose Auto and Microsoft Word will automatically customize your text to a perfect size.

5. Set Color in the dialogue box

6. Check the box located beside Semitransparent in the dialogue box if this affect is wanted

Note: If the box located beside Semitransparent is checked, your text will appear to be more faded, compared to if the box located beside Semitransparent is not checked.

7. Set Layout to either Diagonal or Horizontal in the dialogue box

8. Click Apply in the dialogue box

D. Adding Border

1. Open a new blank document

2. Go to the “Format” menu

3. Select “Borders and Shading”

Note: If you want to create a page border, see E. If you want to create a paragraph border, see F.

E. Adding Page Border

1. Select the “Page Border” tab in the dialogue box

2. Choose the “Setting” (none, box, shadow, 3-D, custom) in the dialogue box

3. Set “Style” in the dialogue box

4. Set “Color” in the dialogue box

5. Set “Width” in the dialogue box

6. Set “Art” in the dialogue box

7. Set “Apply to” to either “whole document, this section, this section – first page only, or this section – all except first page” in the dialogue box

8. Click “OK” in the dialogue box

F. Adding Paragraph Border

1. Select the “Borders” tab in the dialogue box

2. Choose the “Setting” (none, box, shadow, 3-D, custom) in the dialogue box

3. Set “Style” in the dialogue box

4. Set “Color” in the dialogue box

5. Set “Width” in the dialogue box

6. Set “Apply to” the “Paragraph” in the dialogue box

7. Click “OK” in the dialogue box

Watermarks and borders bring out personality in Microsoft Word documents.
