Truck Driver/Equipment Operator/Laborer Job Description

Nature of work:

This is skilled manual labor in the operation of light and heavy trucks and motorized equipment on road construction and repair, and in the snow and ice removal operations of the Public Works Department.

Employee of this class is able to handle and operate all truck attachments and carry out assignments with relative ease. Employee may operate larger pieces of equipment, including a backhoe/loader, bulldozer, excavator, and grader. Employees participate in loading and unloading work. Duties include the performance of manual labor tasks in connection with the operation of trucks or during completion of seasonal work projects. Work instructions may be received in detail for each job to be performed or may follow an established routine. Work is subject to check while in progress and upon completion by the Public Works Director.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Examples of Work (Illustrative Only):

Operates trucks and sanders in the plowing, sanding, and snow removal of roads maintained by the Town of Vassalboro.

Operates light to heavy trucks in performance of public works duties.

May operate other light equipment as needed and may operate heavier equipment.

Operates a light or heavy truck to transport dirt, gravel, wood, and construction materials; assists in loading or unloading trucks.

Performs varied maintenance work including shoveling dirt and rocks, replacing culverts, patching and building roads, and other general duties.

Assists in the repair, maintenance, and occasional construction of Town parks and properties.

Picks up debris such as blow-downs; straightens signs and posts; rakes and picks up leaves, uses chainsaw and chipper to cut and reduce brush; picks up other trash as directed or discovered.

Winterizes trucks and mounts sanders and plow equipment.

Assists in general repair and preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment and assists in general maintenance of the Public Works Garage and all other town-owned buildings.

May be required to fill in for staff at the Transfer Station from time to time.

Performs related work and assignments as required.

Requirements of Work:

Must possess a Maine Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and keep it in good standing. Must comply with all applicable Town, State, and Federal policies pertaining to CDL random drug and alcohol testing.

Knowledge of the traffic laws and MDOT rules involved in the operation of automotive vehicles.

Knowledge of, or the ability to learn, the geography of the Town including the location of streets.

Ability to operate trucks and other motorized equipment safely and according to laws and regulations, and to use a two-way radio to communicate with public works team members.

Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments and service automotive equipment.

Ability to learn the operation of heavier motorized equipment.

Ability to work a varied schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays when needed, and to perform manual labor for extended periods of time, all under adverse climatic conditions.

During winter plowing and sanding season, employee must be reachable by phone after work hours for call-ins and must be within a 25 mile response to the town garage.

Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written directions.

Physical strength and agility sufficient to perform the work of the class. Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds.

Training and Experience Required:

High school graduation, experience in the operation of a wheeler dump truck and earthmoving equipment such as a backhoe/loader, or any equivalent combination of experience and training.

Necessary Special Requirements:

Employee is required to have and maintain a valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) in good standing, and the employee shall be insurable under the Town's vehicle insurance coverage.
