|Job summary: |

|This fixed term Research Assistant (MSc, MRes, Mpharm) position is part of a EUH2020 funded project AVANT: Alternatives to Antimicrobials. RVC’s role in the |

|project is to work with partners to develop non-antibiotic antimicrobial formulations for use in animal health. The aim is to replace the use of antibiotics in |

|certain areas of animal health. The candidate must have established skills in microbiology and a strong interest in the problem of antimicrobial resistance in |

|animal and human health. Skills and understanding in the areas of pharmaceutical formulations, particle analysis, chemistry and regulation are desirable. |

|Carry out experiments under the supervision of senior staff and in cooperation with co-workers |

|Preparing bacterial cultures for analysis |

|Design and develop antimicrobial formulations and characterise using methods for nanoparticle population profiling |

|Measurement and characterisation of antimicrobial activities using antimicrobial susceptibility assays (eg MIC/MBC) |

|Coordinate experiments with collaborating labs running animal model experiments |

|Analyse and integrate experimental results from microbiology, analytics and animal studies |

|Prepare apparatus, instrumentation and other materials such as chemicals and solutions for use in laboratories. |

|Follow Good Research Practice, Health and Safety and Ethics policies as applicable to the work |

|Other activities will include intellectual contribution to the research group as a whole |

|• Publish the grant results in international quality peer-reviewed journals. It is desirable that the candidate have an established publication record. |

|• Present research results at local seminars and national or international conferences. |

|• Participate and contribute to group scientific meetings and to the intellectual environment of the |

|Laboratory as a whole. |

|• Collate and analyse research results, communicating them effectively, both verbally and in writing, to members of the research group. |

|• Explain research activities to non-specialists (in lab demonstrations to visitors) |

|• Manage the daily running of the research |

|• Work effectively as a member of the Group as a whole. |

|• Design experiments that are part of the grant project. |

|• Manage research records and data archives in both electronic and hard copy formats as required for Good |

|Research Practice. |

|• Assist in writing and updating quality assurance and health and safety documents. |

|• Where necessary, manage parts of the laboratory and use of equipment. |

|• Primary responsibility for overcoming problems that arise during the collection, analysis and presentation of data |

|for the grant project. |

|• Design and refine new experimental methods as necessary to adjust protocols for new situations |

|• Collect, analyse and communicate results of the grant project, including experimental/modelling data, |

|• Analyse the data using software tools as required for the project. |
