College Pennant Project

AVID students! Now it is time to find a college that you might want to attend. Your goal is to pick a college and research it. Working with a partner, you will create a college pennant to help you present what you find.

1) Go to

Work with your teammate to click the boxes (you should agree) to narrow down your search. As soon as you narrow the list down to 20 or less colleges, pick one and click on the link.

2) Now, take Cornell-notes on the following topics (use information from Collegeboard and from the college’s website):

• General Information (Name of School, colors, mascot/nickname, president, location)

• What type of college is it? (big vs. small, public vs. private, urban vs. suburban vs. rural)

• Cost (tuition, room and board, fees, books, how much total per year and for all four years)

• Admissions/How do you get in? (What tests do you need to take? What grades do you need to have? What classes do you need to take?)

• Majors and degrees offered (What can you study at the college? What degrees can you earn?)

• Clubs/Sports (find 2 clubs and 2 sports that you could participate in)

• Extra information (go beyond the requirements)

Your notes must be complete before you begin step 3. That means that you must write questions, revise and summarize your notes. Important information (not the entire sentence or paragraph) should be highlighted. Additions or corrections should be made in a different color. The summary should follow the rules of good summary writing (see your notes if you are unsure). You must show me the completed notes before you move on to step 3.

3) Create a College Pennant! Let your artistic talent shine through. You must include the following information on the College Pennant: the name of the college, the location (just city and state), the colors (your banner should be those colors), and an image of the mascot.

4) Using Microsoft Word, create a “Quick Facts” sheet. All the information from your notes should be included on this sheet.

Due: Friday, May 6th

This project will make up a large percentage of your grade for the 4th nine weeks.

****Think carefully about who your partner will be. If one person is absent frequently, or does not work hard, each person in the group will earn the same low grade.****
