Department Philosophy:

The mission of the DeKalb School of the Arts High School Science Department is to nurture a sense of wonder and to empower every individual to connect their knowledge of science to everyday experiences.

Course Description:

Students will explore the anatomy and physiology of the human body. The study will begin with the basic structure of cells, and then progress to tissues, organs and human systems. Students will learn clinical terminology, study diseases and tests conducted for diagnostic purposes, and apply these concepts to modern health practices and issues. Lab activities will be performed through out the semester to enhance the understanding of the human body.

Week 12- Endocrine System

Week 13- Excretory System

Week 14- Immune System

Weeks 15 and 16- Reproductive Systems

Week 17- Human Growth and Development

Grading Scale:

Homework /Class Work/Daily work 15%

Required Materials:

textbook (issued to students by school)

1” 3-ring binder/notebook

paper

pen or pencil

12- pack colored pencils

3 x 5 index cards-several packages throughout the semester

Classroom Expectations:

1. Students must be in their seats when the bell rings to begin class or they will be counted as tardy.

2. No eating or drinking (water in a bottle is permitted) will be allowed in class.

3. Students should be prepared for class each day by bringing textbook, pencil, paper. and colored pencils.

4. Integrity is the keyword at Avondale High School. Dishonesty of any kind will not be tolerated. School policy requires the following actions if a student is caught cheating:

1- The student will receive a grade of zero on that assignment/test/quiz.

2- The student’s parents or guardians will be notified.

3- The student will be referred to the Assistant Principal.

4- The student will receive a U in conduct.

Please note: In order to achieve a final grade of 90 or above students must consistently:

1- Participate in all lab activities/complete labs with accuracy and neatness

2--Turn in accurately completed homework by the specified due date

3- Carefully read and study assigned textbook selections and articles

4- Turn in organized, neat, concise, and complete handouts and illustrations

5- Adequately prepare in advance for major tests (a minimum of 2 days notice will

be given before a major test)

6- Complete other assigned work as may be assigned

NOTE: Since this is a class dedicated to the understanding of anatomy and physiology, students will be expected to participate in lab exercises that may include the dissection of organs from appropriate organisms.

Late Assignments:

Late assignments will be accepted. However, the maximum grade for late work is 50% or as determined by the teacher. It is the student’s responsibility to find out and complete missing work.

**A note from a parent/guardian may be required to accept assignments under special circumstances determined by the teacher.

Make-up Policy:

1- Students have one week from the day of return from an EXCUSED absence to make up a major test.***

2- For full credit, students have the same number of days to complete assignments as the number of excused absence days. Beyond those days, the assignment will be considered late and graded accordingly.***

Re-do Policy:

In order to better prepare students for future employment opportunities and college classes, assignments need to be completed to the best of the student’s ability initially. There is NO re-do of assignments. Remember, tutorial is offered twice a week - see me immediately if you have any questions.

*** It is the student’s responsibility to obtain missed assignments and to schedule make-up tests before or after school. To avoid loss of instructional time, no missed work will be given during class.
