Ok so some of the questions today that i'm going to be asking you pertain to social media and body image so if you are body image sensitive or otherwise I just wanted to give you a heads up. The purpose of this study is to explore the ways in which the use of instagram impacts young women's bodies. You will have a consent form that I will give you to sign. Everything will be kept anonymous unless you let us know you are ok with it not being anonymous. How many hours per day do you spend on instagram and if you don’t use instagram what social media sites do you use? Subject 3: On average during the week I spend about three hours on social media and I’d say most of that time is on instagram. Tianni: Particular pages? Or just like your explore page or your feed? Subject 3: The feed and the explore pageTianni: Are you generally happy with your own body image? Subject 3: Yes and no.Tianni: Ok and do you think it stems from anything in particular? Subject 3: I think the largest part of it for me is weight. Tianni: Do you think that’s because of other people or just personal views? Or has there been an event that has made you more self conscious about certain aspects? Subject 3: I think just the social norm of weight is like negative towards larger women just because more recently there has been body positive in bigger women modeling but overall the negative connotation is towards overweight people because of the health risks and things like that. Does that answer your question? Tianni: Yes, it totally does. So what makes a girl or a woman beautiful to you personally? Subject 3: Personality and probably.. you mean like looks wise? Tianni: Yes Subject 3: Ok I mean proportional. Proportionately fit and healthy. No acne. Tianni: Oh really? So acne is a big one for you? Subject 3: Yeah Tianni: is that because of self reflecting or just because that’s what you find attractive or?Subject 3: I think both because I think acne stems from the whole overweight thing. Tianni: OkSubject 3: Well partially at least. I think beautiful clear and tan skin is beautiful. Tianni: So your personal views Subject 3: Yes Tianni: Has using social media affected your views on body image? Or your personal body in any way? Maybe there are things you'd like to tweak because of it? Subject 3: Yes. I think when I was younger and first started using social media it was more so how to tilt your head to make it look thinner, or how to use the duck face, or body stances like oh I look thinner from the side rather than the front. More recently following people like Ashley Graham or even just people in my community that run health pages had encouraged me to eat a little healthier and help me lose weight. I've been seeing these people like ashley graham promote being healthy but still a thicker girl. Tianni: So you mention that from a younger age you have noticed that there certain ways to perceive yourself to be more attractive. How old were you when that started? Subject 3: I was in middle school. Id say as early as sixth grade. I'm not sure what age that is? Tianni: So right around puberty? Subject 3: Yes.Tianni: Ok, really interesting. I have not experienced that at all so that’s really interesting. So has there been any influencers or celebrities, I know you just mentioned ashley graham, that have ever caused you to think positively or negatively? Subject 3: Well for negatively I don’t think in the sense of like directly making me feel bad, but I think indirectly making me more aware of how much bigger I am or how I would look in the pose their in or the clothes that they are wearing. Tianni: ok. Interesting. So do you think that there are particular ideas about the body that are the perfect ideal body and that are only found attractive through social media and do you think that these are because of social media or just normal characteristics of social media?Subject 3: One thing that I think social media has done to really impact me in relation to what the perfect body looks like is cellulite and photoshopping cellulite out and smoothing skin and stuff like that. So I think that’s a big one. Tianni: I would agree with that. Which brings me to my next question.. and this is a hard question for me to ask people because I know that they may not always be honest because its kind of shamed.. but do you sometimes edit parts of your body before posting a picture to social media? Subject 3: YesTianni: I have heard this is a super common one. I've heard a lot about acne and teeth whitening, which I have done the same exact thing. This kind of points to me that these are the common things that we are finding imperfections in. Subject 3: I also think that it says something because there are apps you can get that are free where you can whiten your teeth and fix your acne and smooth it over. The fact that they're promoting that you can do this, this, and this makes young girls think they should do this, this, and this. So I think that says something. Tianni: I have also seen those ads while I am scrolling through my instagram. Subject 3: YupTianni: So I would definitely agree with that. These apps are influencing girls to make themselves feel like they need to change their body. So do you sometimes post particular photos that make you feel good about your body with the intent to accenture certain aspects of your body?Subject 3: YesTianni: For sure? Subject 3: Yes Tianni: So it's like the things that you feel confident about with your body? Subject 3: There are times I even wont post pictures of really fun experiences because I don’t like the way I look. More so than posting good images of myself id probably reject more images of me. Tianni: So you just studied abroad? Were there a lot of instances like that when you studied abroad? Subject 3: Considering I was in australia and on the beach most of the time, yes. I barely posted any photos of me in a bathing suit. And the ones that I did, I did smooth out cellulite and things. So, yes. Tianni: Do you think that social media is creating a standard for women’s bodies, or beauty, that is almost unattainable? Subject 3: I think it contributes and I think it takes a really strong women to be on social media and still be really positive about her body. I don’t think social medias main intention is to make us feel bad, but I think that a lot of it is subconsciously that the women herself has to feel confident enough in her body to no have it affect her. But that’s barely anyone in my opinion. I feel like everyone feels self conscious in some way. Tianni: Yeah I would agree with that. I think that there's always something were self conscious about and then we go onto social media and we see someone else who is… Subject 3: perfect in our eyes? Tianni: Yeah. And then it definitely contributes to your own confidence for sure. So yeah.. that’s really all.Subject 3: Oh that’s it? Tianni: Unless there's anything else you wanted to say or something you would like to close your interview with? Or? It's really up to you. Subject 3: No, if I think of something I will tell you later. Tianni: Alright, awesome, thank you! ................
