3: Unsatisfactory effort - Most assignments are not completed on time, student mostly uses native language in the classroom, student has more than 3 unexcused absences and doesn’t participate in class most of the time.

Attendance

Students must miss 8 or fewer classes (e.g., combination of 4 R/W and 4 L/S classes) to earn honors (i.e., meeting requirement for overall 90% attendance rate and "A-" average during stay). Students must miss 12 or fewer classes to earn a certificate for the session (85% attendance requirement for graduation). Students missing 16 or more total classes in a session have violated the terms of their student visa and are subject to dismissal. Students will receive letters at each of these three stages. Tutoring absences count as 1/2 absences for all sponsored(those who don’t pay) and CAP students!

5-15 minutes late = .33 absence

+15 minutes late = 1 absence

Promotion Policy:

Students Must have a final grade average of C (73%) or higher to be promoted to the next level.

A student may NOT repeat a level more than 3 times. If you do not pass the same level 2 times, you will be given a retest. If you test into a lower level, you must move to that level. If you test into your current level, you must pass in the following session. If you do not pass, you will be dismissed from the ELI.

Classroom Policies

If you need to leave to go to the bathroom, you are welcome to do so. Please understand that if you are gone for more than 5 minutes, you will be counted late, and if you are gone for more than 15 minutes, you will be counted absent. Also, if you leave class multiple times for more than 15 minutes, you may be counted absent.Students should participate and be actively involved in each activity during class. Please do not have conversations while other students are responding/talking to the teacher or presenting. Texting/Computing during class is not allowed and will result in a reduced effort grade. Please put your phones on vibrate or “off” during our class and put them away. If you have an emergency and need to take/place a call, please leave the classroom and return immediately after you are done to avoid being counted late.

Certificates

When you graduate from the ELI, you may receive a certificate. To receive a certificate, you cannot have more than a total of 12 absences for both your Listening/Speaking and Reading/Writing classes per session (85%) and must have a C- or better grade average. To receive a certificate with honors, you cannot have more than a total of 8 absences for both classes per session (90%) and must have an A- or better grade average.

Native Language Policy:

In accordance with ELI policy, students are asked to speak only English in the ELI classrooms. Not doing so will negatively impact your effort grade and diminish your learning experience. Therefore, students are NOT to sit next to students who speak their native language in the classroom.

Missed Tests and Quizzes:

Late homework loses 10 points one day after the due date, and will not be collected 2 days after the due date (zero). If you are going to be absent on the day of a test/quiz/presentation, you must contact me by email to let me know before class. No make-ups are allowed without a doctor’s note/emergency and are subject to 10 points off. Also, if I notice that you are consistently not showing up for tests/quizzes/presentations, I will restrict your ability to make them up and will give you zeroes on those assignments.

Therefore, it is extremely important that you are in class on the days of our tests and quizzes. There will be no make-ups allowed in week 7 or 8.
