The Kindergarten Day
A Kindergarten Day at PPPCSArrival and Dismissal: Kindergarten children line up outside the main doors of the school. The teachers will meet the children at these doors at 7:55 am. Students enter the building with the teacher. Students who arrive after 8:58 will be marked tardy. Please refer to the PPPCS Parent Handbook for inclement weather procedures. The children will be dismissed at 2:40 pm outside the main doors of the school. On Wednesdays children are dismissed at 1:30 pm. Please do not come into the classroom to pick up your child unless an inclement weather dismissal is announced by the office. An adult or responsible older child must pick up kindergarten children. Your child will only be released to the people you designate on the dismissal sheet or emergency card unless otherwise notified by letter or phone call from a parent. We will each have a clipboard outside for you to sign out your child every day. It is very helpful if families work together to help establish the system for passing the clipboard to make signing out as smooth of a process as possible. Please remember that we are unable to have conferences at entry and dismissal since we are focused on watching the children at this time to make sure that they are safe.If your child attends after-care please write a note to let the teacher know which program he or she attends (and the days for the program) and we will have a school staff member escort them to their designated pick-up area. Please send a note updating any changes to after-care enrollment if necessary.Lunch: The children will eat their lunches in the cafeteria and then go to the park for recess from 10:50am- 11:35am. Please limit the number of snacks or desserts you give your child to one item. Young children often eat the snacks first and are not able to finish their lunch. Additionally, students will not be allowed to drink sodas, or eat candy during lunch. A healthy lunch for a young child consists of a main item (such as a sandwich), one snack, fruit or vegetable, and a child-sized drink. Breakfast: Breakfast is important for the children to be able to be prepared to learn. If your child does not eat breakfast at home, PPPCS has free breakfast for every child at 7:30 AM. The students are able to eat in the cafeteria before they enter the classroom. Snack Time: Patterson Park Public Charter School participates in the Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Program, which will provide a healthy snack to your child through a federal grant. If your child has any allergies, please let us know since there may not be advance notice of which produce item is being served. Children are encouraged to try new items if there are no allergy issues. The specific details about the schedule for the program have not been finalized and we may ask for some class contributions if there is a particular day of the week that we do not receive snack, or if the program start is delayed. If you do provide snacks to the class, please provide healthy snacks that can be stored in our classroom. Here are some ideas:PretzelsFig NewtonsGoldfish RaisinsCheerios Graham crackersNutri-grain bars Granola bars (nut free varieties)*** Please let your child’s teacher know if your child has a food allergy. ***Please do not send drinks, water will be provided.Rest Time: Kindergarten classes have a 15- 20 minute rest time each day. The child will be able to listen to soft music or a book on tape while they put their head down on a table. This time helps us prepare for our afternoon by allowing the children to relax and refocus.Specials:Kindergarten participates in all of the school’s special area classes (Technology, Library, Spanish, Movement, Art, and Music). The specific schedule for your child’s class will be sent home by each teacher.Home-School Communication“Everyday” Folder: Children will bring the Everyday Folder home each day with completed work and parent information. Please check this folder daily. Read, complete, and return appropriate papers in this folder. Newsletters from the school will be sent home monthly.“Monday” Homework Folder: Kindergarten homework will be sent home every Monday in the Monday Homework Folder for the entire week. Please complete homework every night and return your child’s homework folder every Monday! Homework will be checked every Monday. Please sign the top of your child’s homework.Projects: Projects are an integral part of learning at PPPCS. At the Kindergarten level, these projects are designed to extend our curriculum and should be completed with family support. Projects are sent home each month. Please remember that your child should be the main contributor to the projects. If you have any questions about a particular project, please contact your child’s teacher.Notes:Notes are required for the following reasons:Absences/illnessEarly dismissal for doctor appointmentsDifferent person picking student up from schoolIf you do not send in a written note explaining the absence, district policy states that it must be marked as unexcused.Conferences: Conferences are scheduled two times during the year on the system wide half days (12:00 dismissal). These days occur in the middle of each quarter to allow us to discuss your child’s progress. All parents are expected to attend and to pick up your child’s progress report. The dates for the conferences will be announced in upcoming newsletters. These conferences are planned to discuss your child’s progress and offer you ideas on how to help your child succeed. You are always welcomed to schedule additional conferences through phone, email, or sending a note with your child. Newsletters: A kindergarten newsletter for our class will be sent home at the beginning of each month. It will contain information about school events and important reminders. You will also receive information from the school on a weekly basis.Field Trips: A letter describing field trip ideas for the year, including cost and tentative dates, is sent home at Back to School Night. Specific details will be included in the field trip information packet. Reminders are sent home before each trip that will include all important information. Reminders will also include any requests for chaperones (chaperone limits are set by the destination, please send back forms as quickly as possible if you are interested in chaperoning). If you are chaperoning, please remember:Field trips are for Kindergarten students and adult chaperones only, siblings are not allowed to go on the trips, even if they are PPPCS students in another gradeChaperones are responsible for a group of students during the tripsIn order to prepare for trips, chaperones need to be in the classroom 30 minutes before the trip begins. Other Important InformationDressing for School: Child must dress in their complete uniform every day. Please see the Parent Handbook for uniform guidelines; including policies about appropriate sizes for clothing. Children need to be able to fasten and unfasten their clothing independently. Please also know that in kindergarten your child will participate in activities that require children to paint, sit on the floor, play in sand or water, or play outside. Girls who wear jumpers could consider wearing shorts underneath. In cold weather, please dress your child accordingly (hats and gloves, legs covered by pants or tights) since outdoor activities are planned daily. Children have Movement days each week; children must wear their P.E uniform to school (including shoes appropriate for physical activity). Occasionally, students will be allowed to come to school out of uniform, on these days parents will be notified in advance. Please remember to help your child choose clothes that are appropriate for school on those days.Medications: The school nurse will administer all medications. Please contact the nurse if your child is to be given any medicine during school hours. Some medications also require written permission from the doctor to be given at school; please speak to the nurse if you have specific questions. Do not send medicine to school in your child’s book bag. This includes cough drops or “sore throat lollipops”.PPPCS Volunteer Hours: Volunteers are very important to our school. If you can volunteer please let me know on the school’s questionnaire form. There are many tasks for volunteers and we will try to find the one that best fits your needs. The Family Resource Room also has opportunities to help the school.Birthdays: Children may celebrate their birthdays in school. Mini-cupcakes or cookies (1 per student) may be sent as a special treat but they must be store bought with an ingredient label due to allergies. Party bags and juice/soda are not allowed to be distributed. Please let the teacher know at least 1 week ahead of time if you plan to celebrate your child’s birthday at school. This will allow us to make any changes necessary to the schedule and help with coordinating if multiple children have birthdays during the month. ** If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher at school by emailing or calling 410-558-1230. Please know we cannot respond or accept calls during the school day since we will be teaching. ................
