Illustration-Inspired Self-PortraitCreate an illustration of yourself (self-portrait) using your favorite children’s book as inspiration for your character.Pay attention to the illustrations of the book that you choose. What materials do you think were used to create the illustrations? Colored pencils? Paint? Watercolors? Markers? Collage/paper? A mixture of materials? If possible, use the materials the artist used or use the materials you think would best create the same look of that illustration for your self-portrait.Illustration-Inspired Self PortraitPlease read through the document to see the plan for the next few weeks and plan your time accordingly.Upcoming AssignmentsThere will be a few assignment due dates over the next few weeks. It may be a good idea to write the following dates on your calendar or in your planner:Assignment 1-View PowerPoint and complete Brainstorm questions: Week of April 6th (due by the 10th)Assignment 2-Completed sketch with background: Week of April 13th (due by the 17th)Assignment 3-Color/final project completed: Week of April 20th (due by the 24th) Assignment 4-Artist Statement completed: Week of April 27th (due by April 30th)Please take a moment to go to Microsoft Teams. Each illustrator takes an author’s words or creates images to inspire an author’s words in order to depict the story. These can range from simple grayscale sketched out drawings to collages to very intricate and life-like, almost photographic images. Some of Mrs. Stewart’s favorite children’s books:The Little Reindeer by Nicola KillenWhy? I love the black and white illustrations with just a pop of color on each page. It is also very creative that there are “cutouts” on some of the pages that show and create a piece of the image on the next page.Knuffle Bunny by Mo WillemsWhy? The illustrations for this book were created using a combination of black and white photography and hand drawn illustrations.Dear Girl written by Amy Krouse Rosenthal and Paris Rosenthal, illustrated by Holly HatamWhy? Not only is the book inspirational and encouraging, the illustrations are mixed media collages. They appear to include fabric, patterned paper, photography, and several different types of art supplies. Lola Dutch by Kenneth and Sarah Jane WrightWhy? I love the energy of this book. The colors are so vibrant and fun!Links above are provided only to demonstrate some different color options and drawing styles. You do not need to do anything with them. They are just examples.Students will:Brainstorm a list of your favorite children’s books illustrations.Observe key elements of the illustrators’ styles.Sketch a self-portrait in the style of your chosen illustrator.Create a background for self-portrait in the style of chosen illustrator.Shade character and background using style and materials of illustrator (or to look like materials used by illustrator).Compose a short Artist Statement describing the process of your self-portrait.Possible materials needed for this project:TabletNotebook paper (for brainstorming)Computer, Drawing or Construction paperPencilRulerEraserPencil SharpenerArt supplies that best represent the illustrator’s style you’ve chosen/what you have available at home Ideas may include but are not limited to:PencilColored pencilsMarkersCrayonsOil PastelsSharpie markersPen/inkWatercolor Paint (and paint brushes)Acrylic Paint (and paint brushes)Collage materials-scrapbook paper, magazines, computer images, etc.CameraPaint App/Microsoft WordBrainstorm:Think about your favorite children’s book/character.What book did you choose? Meet the authors here! Sketch CharacterPay attention to details of the characters in your chosen book. Are their faces more rounded or angular? Realistic or not, somewhere in between? Are your characters humans, animals, robots, etc.?Sketch your self-portrait in the style of the illustrator on a sheet of paper or use a computer if needed.Design your backgroundLook at the backgrounds of your chosen illustrator. Is the background simple, realistic, or somewhere in between? Are there lots of details?Create a background for your character/self-portrait in the style of your chosen illustrator. This may include sketching, taking photos, compiling collage materials, or working on the computer. When designing your background, take your illustrator’s style into account, but remember to also consider your likes and interests and draw accordingly.Assignment #2Before moving on and coloring, please take a photo of your sketch and upload it to Teams under “Assignments”.The sketch is a work in progress so things may change between now and Assignment #3.Week 3Add ColorAnalyze the illustrations from the book you chose: What colors were used?
