Objectives:

*To utilize the techniques and concepts learned throughout the semester in a creative photographic essay

*To develop creativity in shooting

*To go beyond the documentary

*To utilize all darkroom skills

*To utilize all Aviary skills

Description:

Art History: Lewis Hine, James Van Der Zee, Dorthea Lange

Aesthetics: What is the value of document photography? Do we value as art or communication or both?

Studio: Creation of a documentary series

Criticism: How successful in telling a visual story?

Problem to Solve: Problem to solve: How can you create an original photo essay that chronicles an event, issue or situation?

*Studio: Please use the lighting packet to experiment with different lighting techniques and how they impact subject and composition and research

*Digital: Exercises: Shoot a series of digital portraits that will encompass the major portrait types and finish in Aviary. Project: shoot your photo essay in digital and manipulate on computers to manipulate viewer

*Darkroom: Shoot a photo essay that is documentary but allows each image to individually stand as an artwork.

Requirements:

*Must research one prominent artist and write short bio, formal critique upon one image, as well as assessment of style

*Must complete photo essay background worksheet

*Must shoot whole roll of film

*Must develop one contact sheet

*Must develop 5 final prints that tell a story:

*Must shoot digital version of photo essay and manipulate in Aviary

Photography that changes the world:

Using the image you chose to investigate, please research the following information:

*Date the photograph was taken?

*Photographer name?

*Where was the photograph taken?

*Is photograph B&W or color? Why?

*Describe all imagery in Photograph:

*What meaning/intent is derived from Photograph?

*Give background on issue depicted in photograph. Include:

-give approx. date that issue began

-give parties involved

-give facts of issue

-how did photographer happen to shoot image?

-what emotional response occurs when viewing image?

-how did this photo affect world view on issue?

*How does understanding the image’s impact upon world view affect your understanding of the power of photography?

*List 5 issues that you are interested in exploring in a photoessay that would change world view, whether it be local, national, or global?

*Complete the following questions completely:

1. What is your story?

2. What backgrounds/environments will you need to shoot?

3. What participants? Who will be central or key figures?

4. What lighting and supplemental equipment will you need to address essay?

5. What techniques will you need to accomplish this photo essay? Sabbatier effect? Vignette effects? What photoshop effects?

6. Sketch out your ideas for each print frame! NO STICK FIGURES! I need to see the composition proposed for each shot. Is the person sitting, is it just hands, is it a story on environment decay? Composition is key to me understanding what you are doing!
