Party Ideas

1. Game Night Have each person or family bring their favorite board/ card game and set up rotations or divide into groups to play each game for a determined amount of time (30 minutes each, for example)

2. Bring a Topping Party Have everyone bring a topping for a certain food: Pizza toppings - host provides sauce, crust, cheese (or could assign) Hawaiian Haystacks - toppings Ice Cream Sundaes - toppings/ice cream Yogurt parfaits

8. Water Party in the Backyard Gather all the squirt guns you can find and have every family bring a box of popsicles or other treats. Can buy a big sheet of plastic at Home Depot to use as a water slide.

9. Block Party / Progressive Dinner Arrange menu ahead of time and assign neighborhood families to "host" different courses.

10. Book Exchange Party Everyone brings books they don't want and can earn credits for exchanges. Could have different categories set up on tables. Cute decorations made with book pages! (Alternate ideas: back-to-school clothing exchange or accessories exchange.)

3. Photo Booth/Photo Party Provide props for photos and then post them to Facebook, Instagram, Flickr, etc. Even paint a cardboard cutout person with a space for the face that fits the theme of your party.

4. Old-Fashioned Parlor Games Charades, sardines, etc.

5. "Drive-In" Movie Night Show a movie in the backyard, on the side of a garage, etc. Serve popcorn, drinks, and nachos (can rent popcorn machine).

11. Spa Party for Moms or Daughters (or Both) Everyone brings a polish to share.

12. Heritage / Cultural Celebration Everyone brings a story of their ancestors and a "secret family recipe" to share. Decorate with photos of ancestors.

13. Tasting Party / Recipe Exchange Instead of having to make enough to take home (like traditional cookie swap), just make enough to share and then provide recipe. Could make recipe flipbook as a party favor.

6. Backyard Film Festival Give people a theme and bag of props. Time limit to create a movie.

7. Last Day of School Party Popsicles at the park; invite the neighbors to all come and bring a treat. Nice for the parents to chat, meet the neighbors, and for the kids to celebrate.

14. Craft Night Have an "expert" come and demonstrate a project. Everyone provides materials or $ to complete project. Ideas include canvases, wreaths, topiaries, scrapbooks, etc.

15. "Tiny" Party Serve all things miniature and go miniature golfing (or make a course in the yard).

16. Number Party Choose a number and carry that theme throughout the party.

17. Artist Party Print inexpensive artwork at , or copy artwork from library books and use as decor; provide each person an inexpensive canvas and have them decorate it as they wish. Then hang artworks and have an "art show." Serve hors d'ouevres and sparkling cider in champagne glasses. Wear berets and art smocks!

18. End of Year Party (Could be school year or calendar year.) Make time capsules in inexpensive bottles and date them to be opened at a future party. Look up a list of current best-selling books, music, sports stars, movies, etc. to include in each time capsule. Have each person write down answers to questions about their life at the moment it is created. Take a photo to include. Watch "Back to the Future" or other time-traveling movie. Could also be a fun birthday party!

19. Spy Party "This is your life" party for a milestone birthday--or bridal shower, anniversary, etc. Gather info about great moments in a person's life and provide anecdotes, slideshow or photo collage, and even video interviews with key players (comments from high school teacher, best friend from childhood, siblings who live far away, etc.) Great for a surprise party, but takes some preparation.

21. Bring Your Favorite Book to Life Have guests dress in that way, and serve foods the people may have eaten. Watch a movie version of the book if available, and/or play games from the time period. (Percy Jackson: Greek theme; Jane Austen party - play croquet and have high tea; Great Gatsby - roaring 20's theme; Fancy Nancy tea party; etc.)

22. Around the World in 80 Minutes! Have different people share other cultures. Play games or watch a foreign film. Share food from other cultures (easy to find different foods at most grocery stores, or can visit specialty food stores like World Market, Asian Grocery stores, etc.)

23. Chocolate Party Everyone bring a different chocolate-based food, have a chocolate fountain, dress in brown, etc.

20. "Itty Bitty City" Compile a list of photo clues that show details of signs, buildings, monuments in a specified area (5 blocks x 5 blocks downtown, for example). Then send groups to find them and report back in a specified amount of time.
