Independent clause: a clause that has a subject and a verb and can stand alone; a complete sentence

Dependent clause: a clause that has a subject and a verb but cannot stand alone; an incomplete sentence

Comma Use

Use a comma to join 2 independent clauses by a comma and a coordinating conjunction (FANBOYS):

Road construction can be inconvenient, but it is necessary.

The new house has a large fenced backyard, so I am sure our dog will enjoy it.

Use a comma after an introductory phrase, prepositional phrase, or dependent clause.

To get a good grade, you must complete all your assignments.

Because Dad caught the chicken pox, we canceled our vacation.

After the wedding, the guests attended the reception.

Use a comma to separate elements in a series. Although there is no set rule that requires a comma before the last item in a series, it seems to be a general academic convention to include it. The examples below demonstrate this trend.

On her vacation, Lisa visited Greece, Spain, and Italy.

In their speeches, many of the candidates promised to help protect the environment, bring about world peace, and end world hunger.

Use a comma to separate nonessential elements from a sentence. More specifically, when a sentence includes information that is not crucial to the message or intent of the sentence, enclose it in or separate it by commas.

John's truck, a red Chevrolet, needs new tires.

When he realized he had overslept, Matt rushed to his car and hurried to work.

Use a comma between coordinate adjectives (adjectives that are equal and reversible).

The irritable, fidgety crowd waited impatiently for the rally speeches to begin.

The sturdy, compact suitcase made a perfect gift.

Use a comma after a transitional element (however, therefore, nonetheless, also, otherwise, finally, instead, thus, of course, above all, for example, in other words, as a result, on the other hand, in conclusion, in addition)

For example, the Red Sox, Yankees, and Indians are popular baseball teams.

If you really want to get a good grade this semester, however, you must complete all assignments, attend class, and study your notes.

Use a comma with quoted words.

"Yes," she promised. Todd replied, saying, "I will be back this afternoon."

Dependent Clause

A dependent clause is a group of words that contains a subject and verb but does not express a complete thought. A dependent clause cannot be a sentence. Often a dependent clause is marked by a dependent marker word.

When Jim studied in the Sweet Shop for his chemistry quiz . . . (What happened when he studied? The thought is incomplete.)

Dependent Marker Word

A dependent marker word is a word added to the beginning of an independent clause that makes it into a dependent clause.

When Jim studied in the Sweet Shop for his chemistry quiz, it was very noisy.

Some common dependent markers are: after, although, as, as if, because, before, even if, even though, if, in order to, since, though, unless, until, whatever, when, whenever, whether, and while.

Independent Clause Followed by a Dependent Clause: No Comma

Examples:

I was thinking of dinner while I was driving.

I knew I would succeed although there were obstacles.

I decided to buy a pint of ice cream instead of a double-scoop cone because I was hungry.

Commas/CS/RO/Frag/Sentence Structure

No one  can go back and change what I wrote they simply have to accept it.

I was always a good reader but it never dawned on me that you not only have to read but you have to understand what you are reading.

As time goes on, she loses that sense of embarrassment through the sheer oddity of what she is doing. Shoveling and moving manure was not something she was accustomed to, but as she spent months doing it,  it became something she enjoyed. This freedom she appreciated, as she was trying to get back into the swing of life after school

The essay "Selling Manure," by Bonnie Jo Campbell, explains how dirty, nasty jobs, like selling manure, are fulfilling.

On the other hand, prostitues do not have morals and he or she is not in the right mindset due to the fact that he or she is selling body parts.

Somehow, her feedback made me realize how easily writing came to me, and for a short time, I was writing my own poetry to get over a hard time and it helped. I also notice that writers who write like I do, in example, Chuck Palahniuk.

Reading, writing, and thinking.

When I have to read I never really mind it, it’s just not for me.

Commas in a Series

I believe in order to be successful in life you need to be able to read properly write properly and comprehend it all.

Awkward/Clarity/Be Concise

I also read the news on my iPad quite often as well.

It's just interesting to me to read what people go through and be a little bit into their mind.

I also engaged in mapping to have a semi-organized layout of my writing before I begin.

Ms. Campbell even found the job liberating from her nine months of sitting in a classroom listening to professors and reading text books. Selling manure not only allowed her thinking time in the barn, but also the freedom of her mother's truck on the higway."

To say that reading is an uninteresting hobby would be too egregious an error to overlook.

Semi-colons

Even the most low paying jobs have very rough, tiring work that the employee should be able to be proud of. For example, people that work at Mcdonalds get paid minimum wage, nevertheless, they have to deal with crazy customers and run around to make sure everything that they put in the bag is right.

I also want to think harder; to question everything further.

There could be assumptions that come wit the jobs, for example, people who work in prostitution may be though of as low, or desperate.

Modifiers

I can recall sweltering summer evenings in the living room of my old cottage in which we would all sprawl out across the various chairs and couches, exhausted after long days at the beach  and my father would read chapters aloud of books such as those of the Harry Potter series.

There is no specific reading material I would want to read in class due to being open minded

I did well writing in college, with planning and effort.

Agreement

In reading, my strengths are no doubt in poetry as I love deciphering their meaning, while my weaknesses are in active reading.

An author is free to express themselves through writing using any words and ideas they please.

In any case, writing is something that has always came easy to me.
