COMMUNITY PHARMACY DEVELOPMENT TEAM WEEKLY UPDATE26th May 2021We hope that you will take some time to read the information below and share with the whole team.Dawn, Aileen and Fiona Pharmacy First Scotland additional PGDs- PCA (P)(2021)7 (attached) was sent to all pharmacies on Monday from PCCO. It outlines the 2 new NHS Pharmacy First Scotland PGDs which will enable pharmacists to provide advice and treatment for shingles and skin infections. The PCA includes the link to the Turas modules which need to be completed, and draft PGDs which pharmacists will need to familiarise themselves with before delivering the service starting from 15th June. NHS Lothian will send out the signed copies of the PGDs along with the authorisation sheet for pharmacists to sign once they have been approved locally.Chloramphenicol eye drops and NHS Pharmacy First Scotland - Chloramphenicol eye drops 0.5%, are now contra-indicated for any child under 2 years of age.As detailed in the Lothian Joint Formulary (LJF) , self-care is the recommended first line treatment for bacterial conjunctivitis. Most cases are self-limiting and resolve within 5-7 days. For children under the age of 2 years who require treatment you should refer on to their GP. The LJF details Pharmacy First recommendations for infected eye and child bacterial conjunctivitis (including local guidance on antimicrobial eye preparations available on prescription for children < 2 years)????????????????????????????????????????? There is no national NHS Pharmacy First Scotland PGD supporting the use of chloramphenicol eye drops in children under the age of 2 years under the NHS Pharmacy First Scotland service. As part of this, patients are being encouraged to ask more questions and find out more information about their medicines, for instance, so that they can make better decisions around care and treatment.? Please see attached for related communications and a publicity flyer which you may wish to print out and use in the pharmacy.“Right Care Right Place” Poster – Please find attached a poster which you can print off and use in the pharmacy to encourage patients to access the ‘right care in the right place’.? This poster highlights in particular all the care routes available to patients currently and when to use them.Consultant Level Pharmacist Survey – The RPS in collaboration with NHS Education for Scotland, Health Education England, and Health Education and Improvement Wales invite you to participate in a study to understand the needs of advanced pharmacists in developing towards consultant level practice.?
