If there's ever been a year in which some good laugh was needed, it's 2020. These are tough times, we all had an unusual amount of time alone this year, and there is nothing better than a good guffaw to burn a little stress and make you feel connected with something. Fortunately, while many of the biggest blockbusters of the year and the muchawaited horror titles have been postponed, many high-profile comic films have come streaming and DVD, giving us something to laugh at our home. Like everything else in 2020, it was an interesting and unusual year for comedy. There is a lot of folding genre; comedies that deform towards the drama, action-comedy, horror-commedie, and animated films for children. And then there's that Will Ferrell movie that made us cry like children. A really weird year. We have selected the 2020 comics, from streaming successes to direct surprises to VOD, and the few who have had the opportunity to project in the cinemas, and we chose our favorites. Take a look at the best comedy films of the Collider Staff of the year below, and if you are looking for something you can watch right now, head to the Best Commedies on Netflix and the Best Commedies on Amazon Prime. 12 Hour Shift Image via Magnolia Pictures / Magnet Releasing If you like your comedy is a bit `contested and very bloody, contented, contented for a super fun thriller with Brea Grant's 12 Hour Shift. Set in a hospital during a very snobby and relentless turn, the film plays Angela Bettis as a nurse, whose organ sales plan on the black market goes completely out of the way when the cousin little bright but extremely determined (Chloe Farnworth) loses a kidney taken. Grant has a snappy dialogue and an acute eye (especially in a dance-based scene transition that really delighted me), but as an experienced actress herself, she is particularly excited to get performance killer from her cast. Bettis is definitely excellent in command, and David Arquette goes on through his minimal scenes, but Farnworth is a force of nature as an unstoppable idiot who will do anything to save his skin from doll, as vile. It's the kind of bender-type that will make you crumble through the comedy and smile through the most squirmiest parts. ? Haleigh Foutch An American Pickle Image via HBO Max As long-time fan of Seth Rogen, An American Pickle didn't have to convince me too much to look at it at the beginning of the year when it ended up on HBO Max. Written by Simon Rich (who also wrote the story on which his script is based), An American Pickle follows Herschel Greenbaum (Rogen), an immigrant working in a plant of pickles that is accidentally closed in a brine at the beginning of the 20th century and is released from the salted tomb 100 years laterBrooklyn. Herschel's only surviving relative is Ben (also Rogen), an app developer who welcomes Herschel into his home. As the two reconnect, their very different approaches to life lead them into Very strange situations, including Herschel's attempts to start a failed pickle business. It's time for Herschel to learn what an intern is, what a health inspector is, and what vigil is with a 20th-century attitude. Things get very stupid and very fast when Ben reacts badly to Herschel's new life, leading both of them to face their problems of loss and loneliness. Much of American Pickle's comedy is steeped in seriousness and sweetness rooted in the idea that families are stronger together, so when it disintegrates, it can lead to places as entertaining as it is enlightening. -Allie Gemmill Bad Boys for Life Image via Sony Pictures The most fascinating element of the Bad Boys" films is not the exaggerated action and wild set design like hell, but rather the charisma and comic lines of its two protagonists. Even after a 17-year hiatus, Will Smith and Martin Lawrence easily reconnect with that magic in Bad Boys for Life, making a hilarious, octane-filled film in equal parts. The movie is based on the fact that these two guys are middle-aged (although looking at Smith, you can never tell), with the result of some really delicious gags that come close to the almost farcical comedy of the first movie. A particularly memorable scene involves Mike (Smith) trying to sneak Marcus' (Lawrence) nephew down before pushing Marcus into a high-speed chase in the Burnett family minivan. There are also several Easter eggs for fans of the show that produce nice laughs, especially the masterful opening sequence of the movie. Bad Boys for Life manages to be one of the best comedies of the year without reducing the action by a single comma, which is another way of saying you should watch it right away. The only annoyance is that it is a detective film, with one particular scene that has aged terribly since its release in January. So, maybe by pretending to be superheroes? --Thomas Reimann Bad Education Image via HBO Hugh Jackman filmed one of the strongest performances of 2020 in Bad Education, a drama based on one of the biggest embezzlement cases in U.S. history. Jackman plays Frank Tassone, a superintendent of Long Island who is the model leader with a clean record. Frank's painstakingly crafted patina of perfection begins to break when it is discovered that his dear friend, Assistant Superintendent Pam Gluckin (Allison Janney), has used the school district funds for her own personal gain. The fall of Pam?? begins to reveal how long and deep her deception and Frank's participation in this crime are. Bad politeness is not a comedy as it is explicitly aimed at laughter. However, you'll find yourself laughing at the Bad Education characters, because those on the side and the wrong one in the story are represented by the screenplay by Mike Makowsky and directed by Cory Finley. Bad Education is a comedy steeped in dark and dry humor that helps tension as the plot moves forward exposing its mildly insensitive antagonists. -Allie Gemmill Bill and Ted Face the Music Image via United Artists Releasing One of the brightest spots of 2020 was Bill and Ted Face the Music. In an otherwise very sad year, the third movie in the Bill and Ted series gave us a stroke of joy. Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter return to the trio after almost 30 years of absence, once again playing our favourite time travelers from San Dimas, almost 30 years after Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey. Bill and Ted Face the Music makes very smart and interesting choices with his story. The movie brings us to the present day, where Bill (Winter) and Ted (Reeves) still live in San Dimas and are still trying to make the song that will seemingly unify the world. While they are still musicians and best friends, they are also fathers and husbands, so the pressures of life weigh even more on them. (They are also very co-dependent on each other, a joke that often leads to some of the funniest moments in the movie.) Bill and Ted Face the Music sees the guys trying to save the world once again. This time, they try to steal their world-saving song from themselves. As they walk through their timelines, they meet several Bill and Ted, some in jail, some failed rock stars, and some who find themselves in a nursing home together. This set-up allows Reeves and Winter to really play and indulge in goofiness, creating a very entertaining and moving puzzle. -Allie Gemmill Birds of Prey: and the fantastic emancipation of a Harley Quinn Image via Warner Bros. In 2020, it's not hard to make "the best DCEU movie ever made." But Birds of Prey completes this task with an unparalleled and unprecedented style. You turn backwards on the DCEU finish line with glitter bombs and double middle fingers up. It redefines how much writers can and should bend into traditional superhero cinema (Cathy Yan is doing everything, and I love every second of it). He gives Margot Robbie her much-needed emancipation, and then a little bit of -- seeing Robbie fill this role without any crappy need to pacify the masculine gaze is a bloody joy. His sequences (with the help of John Wick?s' Chad Stahelski) are pounding, fluid, brutal and clear pieces of poetry. Her comedy parts are busy, hard; nothing made me laugh more than Quinn's love and desire for a breakfast sandwich. It reminds us that Mary Elizabeth Winstead is a powerful comedian, Ewan McGregor and Chris Messina are power villains, and Rosie Perez is a powerhouse, period. It is, frankly, one of the wildest mainstream action movies I have ever seen in a movie theater released by a major film studio, and I look forward to revisiting it as the fearless, vibrant pop art object for years to come. -- Lawrence Image via Amazon Studios If you haven't seen Borat yet, you haveI heard. Baron of Sacha Cohen's awakening surprise at his 2006 character/pop cultural phenomenon made headlines for all sorts of reasons (from directing the shortened rally earlier this year to Rudy Guilliani's shameful show which has become a Bonafide political talking point), but if That's not just another satirical skewering of American political hypocrisy, it's a surprisingly tender reminder of the humanity behind partisan hatred. Where Borat has tried to expose vile beliefs complaining of illusions of decency, the sequel tries to highlight the shared bit of vulnerability behind the now explicit hatred that dominates our speech, and of course, make us laugh. Cohen is fearless and hilarious in his return to form, but probably the break of the year is Maria Bakalova, who plays Borat's daughter and steals the show, going to bet with Cohen for every scandalous gag, and anchoring the film in her character's journey to independence. So yes, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm is surprisingly touching, but even the hardest I've laughed out loud in quite a while, and all these years later, you still can't help but wonder at how far Cohen (and now, Bakalova along with him) is willing to go for the bit. ? Haleigh Foutch Downhill Image via Fox Searchlight Downhill doesn't measure up to its Swedish predecessor Force Majeure, but it's a solid movie in its own right that deserves to be seen. The remake of Fox Searchlight by The Way Back directors Jim Rash and Nat Faxon boasts a number of stars between Will Ferrell and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. The duo plays a long-standing couple whose marriage is tested by a harmless avalanche. As a wall of snow falls on their family, Ferrell makes a two-second decision to grab his phone, leaving his wife and children in the process. He argues that her survival instincts have simply started, but she has none, and the rest of their vacation suffers from the resulting fall. Miranda Otto co-stars as a hotel randy doorman who is very open and honest about her busy sex life. Ferrell is a bit misled here, but Louis-Dreyfus does wonders with the role, and really deserves a Golden Globe nomination for best actress in a comedy or musical. He's a pleasure every time he grabs the big screen, and his comic timing here is as impeccable as ever. - Jeff Sneider Emma Image via Focus Jane Austen's most recent shot of Emma is perhaps the most sumptuous and salty entrance into the canon of film adaptations based on the work of the beloved author. Writer Eleanor Catton takes care to preserve Austen's most vivid tones in this version of Emma's story, while director Autumn de Wilde and his crew create a vision of England's Regency-era borderline the sheer bakery delight. These two elements serve as the perfect stopover for Emma's cast. Perfect pitch, led by Anya Taylor-Joy as the owner matchmaker, to interpret dramas within a small town. Unlike Emma's previous adaptations with Gwyneth Paltrow and Romola Garai respectively, or even the modern uber-popular take Clueless, de Wilde Emma. Emma of Taylor-Joy is a little more overly conniving in her schemes to push together two unsuspecting potential lovers, with those efforts that make pain more acutely felt when everything goes to pieces. But for every sour, there is a lot of sweet that comes in the form of dry and pointed comedy. You do not need to look beyond Josh O'Connor as the unbearable vicar Mr. Elton, always prone to a little self-important monologue, or Emma's down-the-nose looks that clearly communicate his lack of a particular person or comment, or moments of more physical comedy (as a strong piano duel), all that bring out Emma's most fun side. -- Allie Gemmill Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga Image via Netflix Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga is not like any classic Will Ferrell movie. Nor is it as Wedding Crashers, the last joint FerrellRachel McAdams of the same director, David Dobkin. If it can be compared to any other Ferrell comedy, the closest I can find is Stranger than Fiction with a condiment of Blades of Glory. I'm not even sure if you're interested in being a "commedia" the way any other comedy is. It sounds more like an inspired sports drama that occurs to use wigs, elves, European accents and theatrical songs to convey its most serious messaging. His heart is completely, unstoppable, designed on his sleeve. The great climate set is a performance of a wonderful ballad with just any joke. And I have no other way. Eurovision is a unique experience, which made me feel -- and made me cry -- in everything. The slogan says everything: "No one wins only." -- Gregory Lawrence Image via Cranked Up Films Extraordinario could be just the sweetest movie of 2020, and this strange little horror comedy is never enough for you. Completely charming, funny to laugh, and occasionally rather disturbing, Extraordinary is a good ghost-busting time that embraces with love the distinctive signs of the infesting genre and remixes them as rom-com. Directed by Mike Ahern and Enda Loughman, the Irish individual Maeve Higgins as Rose Dooley, kind and kind, if a little, woman who happens to have powerful (and sometimes terrible) paranormal gifts. Usually, this leads her to some ghosts enough quotidian who just need a little help passing on, but everything that changes when she takes a concert by helping a local man named Martin (Barry Ward) get rid of the spirit of her deceased angry wife and the ha-been rock star Christian Winter (Will Forte)in the city with a diabolical plan to find his way to new glory. Higgins and Ward make for a positively delicious duo and their chemistry makes it easy in the joyous game of words-jewels of dance of strangeness-exorcism riff. -- haleigh foutch freaky image through universal images probably the best horror comedy since the original scream, freaky is a damn comedy that blows up the body, in which a girl who is embarrassing (kathryn newton) trades places with that of a serial killer hulking (wine vash under his first guide in/teatric in November, freaky is already available to rent on vod and should have its classic status cemented cult immediately. It's so good. - threw taylor the image of the lords through stxfilms guy ritchie has never been a pussy, and neither am I, so I will give it straight. the "c-word" is oata a lot in this flick testosterone-driven. is a vulgar term that is even more unbearable when you consider the title of the movie, but if you can overcome that popular English slang word -- and a lot of other offensive things too, to be sure -- you will see that ritchie is really an offense of equal opportunity, and no one gets rid in the gentlemen. matthew mcconaughey plays a large grass dealer who is trying to cash in and sell his operation to the highest bidder. charlie hunnam interprets his right arm, one who is forced to deal with a flaky reporter (a hilarious hugh grant) who comes to sew while mcconaughey rejects a gangster mad at henry golding. co-stars colin farrell in a scene-stealing turn as a bokse coach who taught his fighters how to use their unique athletic skills outside the ring. The gentlemen may not be an au paired crime comedy with the first ritchie lock, stock and two tux barrels and snatch movies, but will satisfy fans of those movies with its smart twists and twists. Don't say we didn't warn you about this movie's pottymouth. - jeff sneider season happier image via hulu a good warning, the happiest season is a little heavier and much more emotional than a lot of people expected when they hit the game, but this is part of what makes the christmas duvall dramedy worth watching. kristen stewart stars as abby, a gay woman who wants to propose togirl Harper (Mackenzie Davis) at the great Christmas of her familyThere is only one problem: Harper's family doesn't know he's gay, leading to a classic set-up rom-com of fake pharyasant identities and secret temptations. Except they play a bit different here, because the happiest season marks a long-term chapter in the Queer representation as the first gay Christmas rom-com. This meant that the happiest season had a lot of weight on the shoulders that your average holiday romp should not bring, and the conversations that the film unleashed just as demonstrated as hungry people are for that representation. (And the substantial absence of the film in Hulu's presentation at Disney Investor Day in 2020, despite the fact that it reported that it destroyed Hulu's view records for Hulu's originals, only the shows have far away that we still let go.) But whether you're Team Harper or Team Riley (Aubrey Plaza in a supporting role for the film), Happiest Season is a romantic dramedy abbreviation with a fantastic comedy cast. Now I just need a spinoff sequel that is all about the characters of Mary Holland and Dan Levy being the best. ? Haleigh Foutch Hubie Halloween The image through Netflix output Adam Sandler has been largely underestimated. But Hubie Halloween, her first Halloween themed film for the streamer and her first, period, since the supernatural comedy underrated Little Nicky, was surprisingly successful; a hot romp, low-stakes, more makeup than treatment. Sandler plays the title character, a resident of Salem, Massachusetts who loves Halloween despite being afraid of everything. On this Halloween, however, there might be only something to be afraid of ? a series of mysterious abductions leads to a number of suspects including a evaded madman and possibly a werewolf. Hit Sandler's usual cast of regular actresses (including Kevin James, Steve Buscemi, Tim Meadows, Maya Rudolph and Rob Schneider) and some new additions to the team (Julie Bowen, Ray Liotta, a scene-stealing Quinn Squibb), Hubie Halloween complains but never feels lost, with a series of beautiful pieces of characters and dresses recurring riders Chis?, ? Drew Taylor The hunting image through Universal Nothing will prepare you for hunting -- and this is a good thing. After an unfortunate scaffolding in 2019, The Hunt was finally released early 2020 to a very curious audience. What was that about? Why was it closed? Was it really the shocking and polarizing film politically was marketed as and that earned that unusual shelving away? Welp, no, not really. Look. The Hunt makes it clear in English of the normal dick that both liberals and conservatives are in her crossed hair and takes everyto unnecessarily take the behavior of both sides. but this is both the point and not the point. point.Zobel, Nick Cuse and Damon Lindelof-penned comedy with Betty Gilpin. The Hunt begins with a seemingly disparate group of people drugged and thrown into the middle of a forest. Upon awakening, the group discovers that they share a common thread: They represent the portion of the American population clinging to the kind of insidious ignorance that another portion of the population believes is ruining the country. From there, a fisted version of The Most Dangerous Game comes out, with the mysterious Crystal (Gilpin) walking away from the packet to figure out what the hell is going on. Crystal's search for answers leads to some big surprises. It also allows her to show off a very unusual set of skills, which could put her next to John Wick as one of the best action heroes in recent memory. Through Crystal's Arch, The Hunt delivers its most brutal and shocking twists. Along the way, Gilpin brings his full range as a comedian to the table, nailing some hard line delivery that points the line between absurd comedy and black. The plot of the movie spins, as well as some genuinely-sounding laughter moments (keep eyes peeled for a very good sequence set in a bunker), help discuss The hunt thesis that, honestly, we could be fine and really fuck here in A.'s good ol?U.S. because whatever is going on in this moment doesn't work. -- Allie Gemmill The King of Staten Island Image via Hulu While The King of Staten Island is really more of a drama than a comedy, A) it's a Judd Apatow movie and B) it's still classified as a comedy, so we're saying it counts for the purposes of this list. And it's a good movie! Pete Davidson draws from his personal life to chronicle the story of a senseless young man wandering aimlessly around Staten Island, wondering if he will ever do so. The comedy comes primarily from Davidson?s dark humor about his father?s death and his interactions with his friends, but the film makes it clear that the humor masks deep pain and pain that he continues to avoid at all costs. It is Apatow's most ambitious and dramatic film yet, while maintaining an overwhelming sense of humanity through humour. ? Adam Chitwood Love and Monsters Image via Paramount Pictures Well, this came out of nowhere. Love and Monsters was one of many Paramount genre movies quietly entangled in VOD when it was very clear that theaters would not be open in time (see also: Spontaneous, Spell), and it was a big surprise (very good). In the future an asteroid threatens to wipe out the earth; when the asteroid is destroyed, the chemical fall turns all cold-blooded creatures on earth into huge, horrible mutated monsters. Dylan O?Brien plays a survivor who settles to connect with his long-separated (socially detached?) love through a which threatens to swallow him every turn. Visively sophisticated with an amazing amount of heart, Love and Monstersin an unexpected territory, including a tender relationship between the character of O'Brien and a stray dog (supposed that the two loved in real life) and a twist of Twilight Zone-y that, you wouldn't know, humans were the real monsters? With Michael Rooker's winning support performance (like a pissed wanderer) and a very adorable Jessica Henwick as O'Brien's paramour, Love and Monsters is very worth looking. ? Drew Taylor On the Rocks Image via Apple TV+ At least 2020 gave us a new film by Sofia Coppola. The strangely overlooked Sulle Rocce, part of the A24 partnership with Apple TV+, is a beautiful effervescent Coppola-shaped return whose latest film was the dark-coloured female revenge film. In On the Rocks, Rashida Jones plays a creatively raped writer who suspects that her husband (Marlon Wayans) can cheat on her, leading her to collaborate with her pathetic father (Bill Murray) to try to get answers. Lighthearted, full of shows that are unstoppable and uncontaminated in the velvety version, extremely rich in New York City that only someone like Coppola could represent adequately, oscillates between frivolity and deep pathos with ease. In fact, they are the interludes in which Jones is obsessed with the vitality of his creative life that he feels Coppola reaching for an autobiographical truth that just so happens to be set within an airy comedy of sighting. Equipped with a fantastic score of French pop band Phoenix (covered by Coppola's husband) which is, damned, still unavailable, and lush cinematography by Philippe Le Sourd, On the Rocks is a truly unseen gem. ? Drew Taylor Onward Image via Pixar Pixar first original film since 2017 Coco (yes, seriously), Onward is Pixar at their most imaginative and heart-tugging. In part, based on the childhood of co-author/director Dan Scanlon, Onward tells the story of two elf brothers (refugees of the MC Tom Holland and Chris Pratt) who live in an incredibly magical kingdom and who embark on an epic quest to spend another day with their dear missing father. It is an undeniably intelligent contraption; see how Scanlon and a small army of talented artists, technicians and singers combine a world that is immediately suburban and super-fantastic is an enterprise in and of itself. (We want a pet dragon!) But that Pixar's difference, of course, is the intricateness of that narrative and the way they are able to inject real emotion into something that, in the wrong hands, could have been a purely intellectual exercise. It is also one of the most entertaining films of the studio, with a sequence of centerpiece set in a chain restaurant of the mythical beast, which will let you go mad with laughter. Could have gotten the short final of thewith his theatrical performance, but Onward (who plays and looks very similar to the Pixar version of a movie Amblin) is now on Disney+. If you haven't seen him yet, do it now. It is an epic missionIt's worth embarking on. -- Drew Taylor Doctor Strange has never seen 'Scooby-Doo',' Prove Me Wrong My man actually used "Scooby-Doo" as a verb meaning "to physically beat the real monsters."
