Unit: Chemistry #1: Mixtures and Solutions
Unit Purpose: Teaches students about the qualities and differences between solutions and mixtures.
Materials Needed for Next Time:
1. ice
2. more sugar
3. more lemon juice
4. plastic spoons for stirring
Materials:
Large Plastic Glass Water
Ice Lemon Juice
Sugar or Sweetener Baking Soda
Notes:
1. Keep towels handy. This one could be messy.
2. Mix lemon juice and water ahead of time in large container such as empty soda bottle, then add sugar and baking soda so kids can watch the reaction.
Critique:
1. kids have little patience
2. have helper assist
3. do lemon juice yourself
4. tasty if done right
5. fill 1/3 of 3 oz. Dixie cup with lemon juice and 1/3 cup with water
Procedure:
1) Stir equal amount of lemon juice and water into the glass.
2) Add sugar, about 1 tblsp., to the solution.
3) Have the students taste their concoctions.
4) Add about 1 tsp. of baking soda, and observe the reaction.
5) Add ice, and let the kids drink it up.
Points to make:
• The acidic lemon juice mixes with the baking soda to form carbon dioxide, the same thing used in real soda pop to make fizz.
• Ask the students what they could do to make better soda, such as adding more or less of any ingredient.
• The soda is safe to drink. Make sure the kids don’t add too much baking soda, or it will taste bad.
