Maryland Energy Administration ($100,000 pass-through)

Program Description: Development of a thermophilic anaerobic digester (AD) of poultry litter at the Eastern Correctional Institution (ECI) in Somerset County, on Maryland's Eastern Shore. AD unit will assist in the management of nutrients (phosphorous and nitrogen) directly related to poultry manure. Somerset Country has the highest density of poultry growers on the Maryland Shore and has been identified as a major contributor to phosphorous contaminating the Chesapeake Bay watershed. The AD unit will also provide needed electric power to the ECI facility as well as a high quality fertilizer for commercial use.
