History & Mission: The FBI was established in 1908. On April 30, 1912, Stanley W. Finch was

made the Special Commissioner for the suppression of white slave traffic and established his office at Baltimore, Maryland. On January 1, 1914, this office was closed and merged with the office of the Bureau of Investigation at Washington. In August 1920, nine divisions were created in the field, including one in Baltimore.

The FBI's mission is to protect and defend the United States against terrorist and foreign intelligence threats, to uphold and enforce the criminal laws of the United States, and to provide leadership and criminal justice services to federal, state, municipal, and international agencies and partners.

Throughout its 100-year history, the Federal Bureau of Investigation has protected the American people from threats to our way of life, whether the greatest dangers came from gangsters, public corruption, hate crimes, cyber-attacks, white-collar fraud, or terrorism.

The Baltimore office specializes in several areas including: evidence recovery and processing, computer forensics, tactical support and crisis response, bomb recovery and analysis, hazardous materials, victim assistance, and translation.
