March, 2013

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I love sharing good news about our students’ successes and achievements. This month, I am pleased to let you know that Ryan DaGrava and Pho Bee proudly represented our school in the Math 24 competition on March 9th. Ryan and Pho Bee were the winners from our school and went on to represent Halethorpe during the county wide competition. Ryan was one of the finalists in the single digit competition and Pho Bee won fourth place in the double digit competition. We are extremely proud of both students!

In order to be a top student, you have to attend school regularly. I am pleased to share that the following students have perfect attendance thus far for the year: Jada Adams, Allison Atkins, Ephraim Aung, Kayla Bargo, Colin Bartley, Brianna Bossom, Riley Bozeman, Macie Call, Biak Ceu, Jasmine Clark, Mikaela Clark, Abigail Clontz, Alyssa Croker, Mark Dubyoski, Xavier Easter, John Epp, Tori Grimes, Nicole Groleau, Ernest Kessy, Aamyria Lattimore, Graeme Leoni-Fernandes, Amikah Lopena, Benjamin Lopena, Krista Mullins, Joslynn O’Neill, Kaylynn O’Neill, Johnny Parker, Julianna Parker, Alexis Parr, Riley Repoley, Jabari Roebuck, Kamari Roebuck, Yared Sahle, Salem Serafim, Kai Smith, Jacob Stine, Sydney Stine, Temesgen Tadesse, Era Sui Tial, Carlo Victorio, Gianella Victorio and Reeyana Watson.

Baltimore County Schools are dedicated to student safety. As such, we continue to hold regular safety drills and have restricted access to our building. As we continue to make our school a safe place to learn, there are times when we need to contact parents. We are experiencing some trouble here because many phone numbers have changed. If you have a new phone number, please contact the office so that we may update our records.

Enjoy the month! Thanks for supporting our school!

Sincerely,

Jill A. Carter

COUNSELOR’S CORNER

March Madness

As we have in recent years, we are going to celebrate something special for the month of March at Halethorpe. March Madness to many of us means endless hours of stress as we watch our favorite college basketball teams battle other great college teams in the NCAA tournament. However, at Halethorpe, it will mean college awareness. We are asking our staff and students to wear college gear on Mondays during the month of March. That will be easy to remember…MARCH MADNESS MONDAYS! In addition, there will be some special announcements and displays in the building during the month of March. We are lucky to have the UMBC student athletes mentor students in our building again this year. They have worked primarily with the students in the intermediate grades, but their presence and contributions to Halethorpe have benefited the entire school. Members of the UMBC tennis, basketball, baseball, lacrosse, softball and volleyball teams have come to Halethorpe to raise college awareness. It’s never too early to start thinking about your child’s future. Below are some tips for parents regarding college during the time their children are in elementary and middle school:

1. Encourage your child to challenge him or herself academically, develop good study habits, and become involved in school and community-based extracurricular activities.

2. Discuss career and college options with your child and encourage his or her aspirations.

3. Take a tour of a college campus.

4. Communicate with your child’s future educators and find out if your child continues on a diploma and college track in Middle School.

5. Begin saving as early as possible. Consider investigating and choosing a savings vehicle.

This month’s “TA-DA’s”

BCPS’s Anti-Bullying Day & Halethorpe’s Be a Friend Day (March 1st): The Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) Club helped promote “Be a Friend Day”. I hope the students, staff, and parents enjoyed the posters and announcements they created for the special day.

A NOTE FROM THE HEALTH SUITE

Fruits and Vegetables

"Eat your fruits and vegetables." You've likely heard this statement since childhood. Research shows why it is good advice:

← Healthy diets rich in fruits and vegetables may reduce the risk of cancer and other chronic diseases.

← Fruits and vegetables also provide essential vitamins and minerals, fiber, and other substances that are important for good health.

← Most fruits and vegetables are naturally low in fat and calories and are filling.

Did you know that ½ of your plate each meal should be fruits and vegetables? To find out the amount of each food group you need to eat daily, visit [pic]

Nutrient information for fruits and vegetables

Fruits and vegetables are sources of many vitamins, minerals and other natural substances that may help protect you from chronic diseases. Eating fruits and vegetables of different colors gives your body a wide range of valuable nutrients, like fiber, folate, potassium, and vitamins A and C. This chart of Nutrition Information for Fruits and Vegetables provides examples of fruits and vegetables that are sources of specific nutrients.

Not sure how many fruits and vegetables you should be eating each day?

Visit the Fruit and Vegetable Calculator. Here you can calculate your fruit and vegetable recommendations based on your calorie needs for your age, sex, and activity level. This site also has helpful tips and photographs of 1/2 cup and 1 cup fruit and vegetable examples.

ALSO FROM THE SCHOOL NURSE: ATTENTION PARENTS AND SCHOOL COMMUNITY

School nurse substitutes are needed in BCPS schools. If you have an active Maryland R.N. license, enjoy children, and care about the health needs of our students, this could be a great job opportunity for you. BCPS allows substitute school nurses the flexibility to be available to work the number of days per week you prefer, in the area of the county you prefer, and with the age group you prefer. As a substitute school nurse, you will provide first aid to students, perform daily nursing treatments, and administer student medications. The Office of Health Services provides an optional full-day orientation for new nurse substitutes. Compensation is $157.00 per day. Fingerprinting and healthcare provider CPR certification are required, as well as at least two years’ experience as an R.N. in a clinical setting OR at least 6 months experience as an R.N. in a clinical setting and current employment as a R.N. in that clinical setting. Please contact the Office of Temporary Services at 410-887-8952 for more information.
