Dear Parents and Guardians,

I feel the need to share one of the reasons why I love Halethorpe! We have the best students in the entire world! Throughout this year, I will be highlighting student achievement and students’ creative thinking. Our theme this year is Create, Innovate, and Inspire. So, I am very much looking forward to sharing ways in which our students fit the theme. This month, I am honoring five of our great fifth graders. Madison Henn, Connor Armstrong, Allison Atkins, Abigail Clontz, and Tristan Louden came up with a new way of conducting our morning announcements. We used to simply have Riddle Friday. The fifth graders decided that this could be better so they changed the format to the following: Music Monday, Trivia Tuesday, Riddle Wednesday, Hot Topic Thursday, and Fact Friday. The children are even gathering and supplying the material they would like shared each day. Go, students! (

We love to see our parents volunteer for field trips or helping in classrooms. We love our volunteers! Have you been thinking about volunteering? Please complete the following:

SAFETY PLAN REMINDER

We continue to have fire drills, severe weather drills, and lockdown drills to ensure the safety of our students and staff. Please remember, in the event of an emergency, it is essential that we have correct emergency information for all students. If you have recently moved or have a new home phone or cell phone number, please submit this information to Mrs. Simmonds in our school office.

The application deadline for all magnet programs for the 2014-2015 school year is November 25, 2014.

APPLICATION FOR VOLUNTEER SERVICES

Seven years ago, Baltimore County Public Schools adopted a new policy in order to ensure the safety of our children. All volunteers must complete a new Application for Volunteer Services each year. The school will do a background check in order for volunteers to be in the classroom, in the building, or to chaperone a field trip. Please make sure you send in a completed form for yourself, your spouse, a grandparent, etc. so that all can continue to volunteer. Every volunteer and chaperone must have completed a new application and be cleared for volunteering. Applications are available NOW! Please do not wait to return your application to the school.

VOLUNTEER TRAINING WORKSHOP

All persons wishing to volunteer in the classroom, in the building, or to chaperone a field trip MUST complete the BCPS Online Volunteer Orientation, which can now be completed on your home computer!

The following instructions will direct you to the online training:

• Go to the BCPS website:

• Click the COMMUNITY tab

• On the drop-down menu, click on Volunteer with BCPS

• In the “Get Involved” box on the right side of the screen, click BCPS Online Volunteer Orientation

• Complete each section

• Print out the certificate of completion. The printed certificate must be brought to the school as proof you have finished the training at home.

PLEASE DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE DAY OF YOUR CHILD’S FIELD TRIP TO REQUEST TRAINING.

TRAINING MUST BE COMPLETED ONE WEEK PRIOR TO THE TRIP.

A NOTE FROM THE HEALTH SUITE

COMMUNICABLE DISEASE CONTROL Preventing and controlling the spread of infectious disease agents among students and staff is an important function of the school nurse. Although prevalent in the school age population, the spread of infections in schools can be successfully prevented through immunizations and the use of appropriate preventative and control measures.

Parents should be encouraged to keep students home if visible signs or symptoms of a communicable

disease is present, including:

➢ Cough ( Vomiting ( Diarrhea

➢ Runny nose ( Rash ( Jaundice

➢ Sore throat ( Swollen neck glands

➢ Headache, in conjunction with other symptoms

➢ Fever (student should be fever-free for 24 hours before returning to school)

Handwashing with soap and water for 15-30 seconds and drying with disposable paper towels is the single most important technique for preventing the spread of disease and should be done frequently, and:

❖ Before eating and drinking

❖ Before handling clean utensils or equipment

❖ Before and after handling your child’s food

❖ Before and after assisting your child in toileting and feeding

❖ Before and after using the bathroom

❖ After contact with body secretions and excretions, i.e., blood, urine, feces, mucous, saliva, drainage from wounds

❖ After handling soiled diapers, undergarments, or equipment

❖ After caring for any child, especially those with nose, mouth or ear discharge

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FROM THE HEALTH SUITE

In compliance with Maryland law, our school has designated a peanut and tree-nut free table in the cafeteria for use by students with medically documented allergies. If your child has such an allergy and you would like to request this accommodation, please notify the school nurse at 410-737-8346.

EXTRA CLOTHING FOR SCHOOL

• Please consider keeping extra clothes in your child’s (Preschool to fifth grade) backpack for spills and accidents. If clothes are available, your child will be able to return to class quickly and the nurse will not have to interrupt your schedule.

• Please wash and return clothes loaned from the health suite, so they will be available for the next student.

• The Health Suite welcomes donations of clothes.

SEASONAL FLU VACCINE (FluMist)

Students will soon have an opportunity to receive FREE FluMist vaccines at school. Our school has partnered with the Baltimore County Department of Health to offer seasonal flu vaccines. The seasonal vaccine, given as a nasal spray, will protect your child from catching seasonal flu. Outbreaks of the flu can lead to increased school absenteeism and lost days of work for parents. The CDC recommends this vaccine for all children ages 2 years and older. The school nurse is available to answer any questions you may have.

SUMMER READERS RECOGNITION

Students in grades 1-5 were challenged to read over the summer and fill in a reading log. Students who read the appropriate amount of time each month and completed their logs earned an invitation to the Ice Cream Party which was held on September 12th.

A+ BONUS BUCKS

Welcome to the start of a new school year and a year of A+ School Rewards. Starting October 3, 2014 through March 19, 2015 our school will have the opportunity to earn cash through Giant A+ School Rewards Program.

All you have to do is:

• Log on to aplus select CUSTOMER REGISTRATION to register online using your Giant Card

NEW THIS YEAR: If you registered your card last year, you DO NOT need to re-register this year. You can visit the website to verify correct school assignment. Also, don’t forget to encourage your friends and relatives to do the same. It could mean more Cash for our school.

After you register your card, each shopping trip at Giant using your Giant Card earns CASH for our school. Each month, the amount of CASH awarded will be updated on the Giant website. You can track the amount of points you earn for our school by checking your grocery receipt and online when you create an account at . Our school will receive a check at the end of the program. The money can be used for any of our school’s educational needs.

The Office of Food and Nutrition Services will allow elementary school students to borrow funds up to $6.00 for meals. We do not extend credit for snack items. If your child has reached the credit limit, he/she will be given an alternate meal of grahams and milk (breakfast) or cereal and milk (lunch). To avoid this you can make prepayments to your child’s account online using a credit or debit card. Go to to set up an account. To create my lunch money account, your child’s student identification number is needed.
