MD Public School Suspensions and Expulsions by School and Major Offense Category

-i-

Introduction

This report contains data on the number of incidents in each local school system and school during the 2016-17 school year. The data have been disaggregated by gender and race. The incident counts for students with disabilities are also reported. Student incident data are available for reporting by Out-of-School Suspensions and Expulsions, In-School Suspensions, and Combined In-School and Out-of-School Suspensions and Expulsions.

If there were no incidents for a particular characteristic within a Local Education Agency (LEA) or school, then the characteristic is omitted from this report for the LEA or school. If there were no incidents reported for a school, then the school is excluded from this report.

Each offense has been categorized into eight major categories. The following list shows which offenses are included in each major category. Offense definitions are described in the Maryland Student Records System Manual, 2016.

The regulations used in determining which elementary schools exceeded a suspension rate of 10%, in accordance with Section 7-304.1 of the Education Article of the Annotated Code of Maryland, were finalized in September, 2005. In addition, the identification of persistently dangerous schools cannot be determined based solely on these data.

The sum of the subgroup data in this report may not equal all students suspended from the school based on suppression of less than 10 students in membership within a subgroup.

^ Students may no longer be out-of-school suspended or expelled solely for attendance related offenses (Senate Bill 241, effective July 1, 2009).
