A LETTER FROM MR. BENDER AND MRS. WHISNER

January, 2017

Dear Logan Families and Friends,

We would like to say Happy New Year to each and every one of you.  We hope that you had an enjoyable, relaxing winter break.

As you can see from the calendar, the second marking period ends on January 13, 2017.  This is a good time to discuss with your child his/her progress thus far.   Ask your child in what area(s) he/she would like to improve and then help him/her accomplish that goal.  Lastly, please remind your child to continue to focus on learning and to follow the Logan Code of Conduct each and every day.

Thank you for getting your children to school on a regular basis. I would like to stress not only the importance of being in school, but also of arriving on time. When students are late they not only miss breakfast, they also start their day in a rush. Together we can make a difference in your child’s life!

As we encounter the chilly weather, please write down the following phone number: 443-809-5555. It is a recorded message for the Baltimore County Public Schools system that provides current information about schools’ schedules during inclement weather. With winter coming, often bringing snow and ice, we know that the possibility of schedule changes is more likely. This recording will tell you if schools are opening late, closing early, or are closed for the day. The BCPS website at will also display when schools are opening late, closing early, or closed for the day. You may want to download the BCPS Now app (available on the APP Store, Google Play, and the Windows Store) for Android, iPhone and Windows Phone to receive the latest operating status announcements, upcoming events, news and spotlight information about Baltimore County Public Schools.

We look forward to much success this year!

Happy 2017,

Stephen B. Bender

Principal

PENNIES FOR PATIENTS

January 9 through January 27 we are participating in The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's School & Youth Program, Pennies for Patients. This is a service learning program in which kids collect spare change to help those afflicted with blood cancer.  A letter is going home detailing our efforts as well as your child’s very own colorful collection box to assist in the search for spare change.  In addition to the self-satisfaction of contributing to a meaningful cause, the class with the highest earnings will win a pizza party!  How fun!

ATTENTION: 2ND AND 3RD GRADE PARENTS

The Baltimore County Department of Health, Dentistry will be coming to our school to offer the Dental Sealant Program to your child. Dental sealants help prevent tooth decay on the chewing surfaces of molar teeth, where most cavities form. Dental sealants protect these areas by sealing out plaque and food that causes tooth decay. This service will be offered to your child free of charge. Parental consent forms will be coming home with your child next week before the Dental Sealant Program is to start. Students will not be able to participate without a signed parental consent form. If you have any questions, call the Baltimore County Department of Health at 410-887-2780 for more information.

BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION

We are collecting Box Tops again this year. There is a bag in your child’s classroom to put them in. The class who collects the most Box Tops will receive a special treat at the end of the year. Please send them in regularly. We will be able to turn them in for cash that will be used to provide supplementary activities and supplies for our students.

BOOK-IT

Students - remember to record your minutes on your Book-It calendar! At the end of the month, turn in your completed calendar and receive a certificate for a free personal pan pizza at Pizza Hut. Parents - if you’re looking for some good free books online, here is a website you should check out .

.

PERSONAL BELONGINGS IN SCHOOL

Students should not bring any personal belongings to school unless their teacher instructs them to do so. Items that should be left at home include toys, trading or playing cards, ipods, games, balls, magazines,

comic books, and similar things.

FIELD TRIP CHAPERONES/VOLUNTEERS

Anyone who is interested in being a chaperone on a school trip or helping out in the classrooms is required to complete Volunteer Training each year. The training is available online at munity/volunteer_info. After you complete the application, print it out, watch the video, and print out the certificate of completion, bring the application and the certificate to school and our volunteer coordinator, Rose Bland, will let you know when you have been added to our list of approved volunteers. DO NOT WAIT UNTIL A TRIP IS ANNOUNCED TO BE TRAINED. WE RECOMMEND THAT ANYONE WHO WANTS TO CHAPERONE TAKE THIS TRAINING AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

AN IMPORTANT REMINDER FROM THE NURSE TO ALL PARENTS

All students from prekindergarten through fifth grade should have a complete change of clothes stored in a bag that stays in his/her locker.  This is in the event of an accident, an unforeseen spill (during lunch, art, etc.), or rainy or snowy weather – all events during which students might get wet and then need dry clothes.  The school will not provide a change of clothes for students.    Students may not return to class with clothes soiled with body fluids, and a parent will be called at work to bring in a change of clothes if a child does not have a change of clothes in his/her locker.

Now that winter is here, please send a complete change of warm clothes to keep in your child’s locker.
