Happy New Year and welcome back to our Harford Hills Elementary School families! It is always a joy to see all of the children and staff members back at school after the winter break. As usual, we enjoyed a seamless transition back to school. Our students came back rested and ready to learn in 2019, thanks to you. Believe it or not, the end of the second marking period is Friday, January 25, and report cards will go home on Thursday, February 7. Please continue to encourage your children to get plenty of rest, study hard, and eat well-balanced meals so that learning is at a premium. We need students to attend school daily and be active learners. My New Year’s wish for all of you is a year of happiness, health, and achievement. It is a true privilege to be the principal of Harford Hills Elementary School.

INCLEMENT WEATHER INFORMATION

Based on winter weather conditions, schools can open late, dismiss early, or be closed all day. Be sure to check the television and/or radio for weather-related information about Baltimore County schools. Also, you can check the BCPS website to see if schools are opening late or closed all day. Families will not be called if all Baltimore County Public Schools close early. Families will be called if Harford Hills Elementary School is the only school that closes early. Therefore, it is a good idea to check the news throughout the day for updated information about school closings. BE SURE THAT YOUR CHILD’S SCHOOL EMERGENCY FORM IS UP-TO-DATE. The school will use this information for dismissal purposes when ALL Baltimore County Schools close early.

LATE ARRIVALS

One of our goals for the New Year is to have all students come to school and

arrive on time every day. Please help us make sure that your child does not miss one

valuable moment of the great instruction at Harford Hills. For late arrivals, we must

follow certain procedures for our students’ safety. If a student arrives late to school, a

parent/guardian MUST walk the child into the school and sign him/her in. The front

door will be open for students arriving on time. When the front door is closed, this

means that the student is late, so a parent/guardian MUST accompany the child into

the main office. The side cafeteria door for car riders will close promptly each

morning at 8:50 A.M. (based on the school’s master clock). If you are in the car line

when the cafeteria door closes, you MUST park your car and walk your child into the

school’s main office to sign him/her in. Thank you for your cooperation.

STARLAB

Starlab is a valuable educational tool that is used to deliver astronomy instruction to BCPS elementary school students. The Starlab Portable Planetarium will be at Harford Hills Elementary School from January 14 through January 22. All classes (pre-kindergarten - grade 5) will have the opportunity to

visit Starlab for grade appropriate information and activities provided by a BCPS Office of Science staff member. Starlab will be set up in the gym. The Starlab lessons are listed below:

• Pre-Kindergarten - “Searching the Daytime and Nighttime Sky”

• Kindergarten and Grade 1 - “Patterns of the Sun”

• Grade 2 - “Patterns of the Sun on Earth & Moon”

• Grades 3, 4, and 5 - “Stars: Exploring the Magic of Magnitude”

TESTING INFORMATION

ACCESS for ELLs (English language proficiency assessment) will be administered to English language learners (ELLs) during the testing window of January 7 - February 8, with additional time allotted for make-up testing as needed.  Ms. Helou (ESOL teacher) will test Harford Hills Elementary School ELL students in kindergarten through grade 5.  The students will be assessed in the areas of listening, reading, speaking, and writing.  Testing will be computer-based and/or in a paper/pencil format.

THE VIRTUES PROJECT

As we start the new year, our Virtues Project will focus on the virtue of Tolerance. Tolerance can be defined as the following:

• Accepting differences

• Being free of prejudices

• Knowing that all people have feelings, needs, hopes and dreams

• Accepting things that you know are different with flexibility and patience.

We demonstrate tolerance by showing respect and celebrating differences; by not judging others or teasing them; by welcoming others and making them feel at home; and by forgiving others when they make a mistake. During the month of January, we will be discussing these key ideas with students and encouraging them to practice these behaviors. We hope that you will continue these conversations with your children and reinforce these ideas at home and in the community.

MY CHILD IS SICK SO WHAT SHOULD I DO?

This is cold and flu season, so with all the indoor contacts children have with each other, catching a

“bug” is almost inevitable. Below are a few guidelines that may help:

• Have a babysitting plan. Not all parents can stay home from work every time their child is sick. Enlist help in advance from a relative, neighbor or classmate’s parent. Keep your

child’s emergency forms in school up-to-date with the phone of these people.

• Invest in a thermometer. Take your child’s temperature and keep him/her home if it is over 100 degrees. He/She may return to school after being fever–free for 24 hours. Remember that Tylenol and Motrin are fever-reducing medications and do not cure the underlying cause of the illness. Please do not send medication to school with your child; it’s against school policy. Check with Mrs. Herman (school nurse) about policies regarding both prescription and over-the-counter medicines if you are not sure. Never give aspirin to your child unless your doctor has recommended it

because aspirin can cause Reye’s syndrome following certain viruses.

• Keep your child home if he/she has vomited during the night or in the morning before school. He/She will probably need to start with clear liquids and progress to solid food during the day. He/She may

return to school after 24 hours if he/she can tolerate regular food and does not have a fever.

• Colds and sore throats are very common in school-age children, who average five to six colds a year.

Keep your child home if he/she is running a fever or has symptoms that are excessively uncomfortable

or noisy and distracting to classmates. Most children spread their cold viruses to others even before

they themselves come down with symptoms.

• Always call your health care provider if you have any questions about your child’s health.

Please don’t hesitate to call Mrs. Herman if you are unsure about sending your child to school.

FROM THE NURSE

What are head lice?

The head louse, or Pediculus humanus capitis, is a parasitic insect that can be found on the head, eyebrows, and eyelashes of people. Head lice feed on human blood several times a day and live close to the human scalp. Head lice are not known to spread disease.

Who is at risk for getting head lice?

Head lice are found worldwide. In the United States, infestation with head lice is most common among pre-school children attending child care, elementary schoolchildren, and the household members of infested children. Although reliable data on how many people in the United States get head lice each year are not available, an estimated 6 million to 12 million infestations occur each year in the United States among children 3 to 11 years of age

Head lice move by crawling; they cannot hop or fly. Head lice are spread by direct contact with the hair of an infested person. Anyone who comes in head-to-head contact with someone who already has head lice is at greatest risk.

Parents should routinely examine their child's head, especially behind the ears and at the nape of the neck, for crawling lice and nits. If crawling lice or nits are found, all household members should be examined for crawling lice and nits. Persons with live (crawling) lice or nits within ¼ inch or less of the scalp should be treated to eliminate head lice successfully, it is very important that all treatment instructions and steps be carefully followed and completed.

Head lice can be a nuisance, but they have not been shown to spread disease. Personal hygiene or cleanliness in the home or school has nothing to do with getting head lice.
