Postdoctoral Fellowship in

Clinical Health Psychology – Behavioral Pain Management

Geisinger invites applicants for our full-time, one-year postdoctoral fellowship in adult clinical health psychology, with a specialization in Behavioral Pain Management. One position is available for academic year 2019-20, with a start date of Monday, August 6.

Program Overview:

The focus of our postdoctoral fellowship is to develop the professional and leadership skills psychologists need in their many roles within medical settings. Upon completion of this program, fellows will have specialized clinical health psychology training enabling them to hit the ground running in their first professional positions. Fellows may have the opportunity to participate in other behavioral medicine clinical programs and projects, which will be assigned based on a combination of interest, training goals, and clinical need.

Behavioral Pain Management/Integrated Primary Care Track: 1 position

Psychologists at Geisinger are increasingly involved in the development of new institutional programs, policies, and guidelines, the redesign of existing systems, and the evaluation of current programs.

One of the most exciting and unique aspects of this track is that fellows will develop a skillset in system re-design and program evaluation for pain management at all levels in our system.

Research/Program Development: The fellow will have the opportunity to participate in clinical work, research, and program development to promote chronic pain self-management throughout the system and educate providers within the system. Fellows are strongly encouraged to present their work at internal, regional, or national conferences. If desired by the fellow, publishing is encouraged and supported.

• If desired by the fellow, there is flexibility to protect up to 50% of the fellow’s time for grant-funded research/program development:

o grant-funded clinical research/program development,

o original research,

o work on an existing project,

o identifying an area of need and establishing measures to evaluate needs/outcomes, designing a program to address the needs, and evaluating the impact of the program.

• Fellows will have the opportunity to supervise pre-doctoral interns, teach medical students, residents, and staff.

Clinical Work: The fellow will work at all levels of pain management within our system, from primary care to specialty consultation in pain medicine.

• Primary clinical experiences allow the fellow to maximize exposure to work in integrated care:

o Integrated Primary Care - Interdisciplinary primary care pain clinics and primary care behavioral pain management

o Specialty behavioral pain management:

▪ presurgical evaluations

▪ transitional/perioperative pain management consultation

▪ individual/group cognitive behavior therapy

▪ destination spine/neurosurgery

▪ other developing specialties partnering with pain psychology

o Residents may also add Integrated Primary Care experience with diverse behavioral health conditions if meeting all other training goals.

• Clinical services generally include:

o conducting initial assessments and evaluations,

o collaborating with patients to improve treatment readiness, compliance, and treatment planning/goals,

o providing evidence-based behavioral medicine treatment in individual and group formats,

o leading psychoeducational lectures within various multidisciplinary clinics.

o Conducting evaluations for pre-surgical candidates within our unique Destination Spine program and pain medicine for spinal cord stimulators.

o Fellows will also be very involved in the provision of programs aimed at supporting and educating primary care and specialty medicine providers and staff, as well as helping to develop further programming to

o Clinical time also includes consultation, group and individual supervision, didactic seminars, case conferences, chart review, and more.

Seminars and Supervision:

As this is a pivotal training year, all fellows participate in professional development seminars, a weekly inter-professional case conference, and at least 2 hours of individual supervision per week. Fellows will also can teach and supervise 3rd year psychiatry residents in CBT and ACT and practice supervision skills with pre-doctoral psychology interns.
