Fire Department Engine 4: Firefighters from this Engine company, on Coldspring Lane near The Alameda, were in attendance at the start of the meeting. Their Lieutenant stressed the importance of fire safety and encouraged everyone to check their own homes for fire hazards: check heating systems/furnaces/boilers; make sure any extension cords are used safely; and pay particular attention to household members who munity Reflections on the Aftermath of Freddie Gray’s Death: Chris started the conversation by reporting that two York Road businesses have closed since the riots – a relatively new 7-11 Store and Aaron’s Furniture Rental. He reminded the group that the community response to the riots in April – a walk by residents along the corridor – could be credited with keeping property damage and looting to a minimum. Members stressed the need for a communication plan in the event of future unrest – the YRP listserve was effective in April and we could use the website, twitter, facebook, and/or a phone tree to reach residents. Good meeting places are Loyola’s Public Safety Complex and St. Mary’s Church. Neighbors in particularly troubled areas should leave porch lights on at night, sit out on their porches to keep an eye on things, and report activities to the Police. It was reported that loiterers in troubled areas such as the 500 block of Tunbridge and the corner of York and Glenwood are often not from the nearby community. A suggestion was made that YRP should have a regular response to shootings in the area – there have been three lately.
