Bang Up Bulletin Board

Bang Up Bulletin Board!!!

(How's that for alliteration??)

To Kill A Mockingbird

The Concept…

Let's take a creative yet analytic look at our novel To Kill a Mockingbird. Through both independent and group tasks, our class will create a bulletin board devoted to the study of this great classic. The board will share student analysis of: symbol, point of view and character. As we progress in the story, students will have the opportunity to "blog" their ideas onto the "board".

Your tasks…

✓ We will begin the "bulletin board process" by completing the attached assignment independently. Please type your final draft, as all results will be posted on the bulletin board. You will have time in class to complete the rough draft of the assignment.

✓ Next, we will begin the creative element of the board! You will be divided into three teams: Point of View, Symbol and Characters/Stereotypes. Each team will be responsible for designing and organizing the format that their section of the board will take. Materials will be provided. Teams can make decisions based on what they believe will be most readable and appealing for student learning.

✓ Last, we will "post" assignments onto the appropriate board. We can then share some of the information culled by individual classmates.

✓ As we continue on in the text, we will add to the bulletin board; new supporting quotations, additional character attributes etc.

✓ Do your best!!! Let's make this an interactive learning experience.

Analysis To Kill a Mockingbird

Independent Assignment: ENG 2DX

Please complete these tasks independently. You can create a rough draft that will later be converted to a good copy that will be posted on our board. Do your best!

Character Comprehension…

✓ There are many characters in the novel, so you have lots of freedom to choose some that make a particular impact on you. I would like you to pick THREE characters (major or minor) for the sake of this assignment.

✓ Create a chart in your notes with these headings:

|Character |Attribute |Evidence |

| | | |

✓ For each of your three characters, discover two attributes. Next, provide at least one piece of evidence for each of the attributes you have chosen.

✓ Next, create a summary statement explaining how you think ONE of the characters EITHER typifies or defies stereotypes of the time.

Symbol in TKAM…

✓ We will define symbol as a class. Please make sure you have the definition in your notes!

✓ Create a table in your notebook using the format below:

|Symbol |Supporting Evidence |

| | |

✓ Choose at least one symbol that you notice making an impact as you study the novel. As evidence, find quotations that support the existence of the symbol. You should have a minimum of ONE symbol and three pieces of supporting evidence in the table. Be sure to list page references for your evidence!!! (Lee 45).

✓ Create a paragraph that explains what you believe the symbol is meant to represent in the story. Contemplate characters the symbol could stand for or themes/ideas the Harper Lee might have wanted to emphasize. Expand upon your thinking thoroughly.

Point of View in TKAM…

✓ Learn about innocent eye narration!

✓ Because this novel uses an innocent eye narrator, a number of unique issues arise. Many times, we are able to understand more than what Scout can comprehend and other times, we learn from her innocent view of the world.

✓ Using your understanding of innocent eye narration, choose five instances in the story that stand out due to Scout's lack of understanding of the world.

✓ For each of the instances you discover, describe how the narration affects reader comprehension/thought process about the moment.
