Bank of America volunteers join Habitat for Humanity Susquehanna

to build home as part of 5th Global Build

Project comes as part of Bank of America’s broader commitment

to advance economic mobility in Greater Maryland

BEL AIR, MD (October 11, 2018) –Bank of America volunteers joined forces with Habitat for Humanity Susquehanna last Friday for a build day on Giles Lane in Aberdeen as part of Bank of America’s fifth Global Build in partnership with Habitat for Humanity.

“We thank our long-time supporter and sponsor Bank of America for helping us communicate the message that having a decent place to live can remove barriers to opportunity, health and success,” said Karen Blandford, Executive Director of Habitat Susquehanna. “Through our partnership, we are working to connect more individuals in Harford and Cecil counties to a decent place to call home and strengthening our communities.”

This project comes as part of the fifth Habitat Global Build, which marks the bank’s more than 30-year commitment to Habitat for Humanity. During Sept. 26 through Oct. 6, more than 2,300 Bank of America employee volunteers worked alongside Habitat homeowners to build, improve or repair homes in more than 100 communities across seven countries, including the U.S. Here in Greater Maryland, 65 employees participated in five different builds and volunteered at two Habitat for Humanity ReStores.

“Access to affordable housing is a critical stepping stone on the path to economic mobility, financial stability and success,” said Sabina Kelly, Greater Maryland Market President for Bank of America. “Through our longstanding partnership with Habitat for Humanity in Greater Maryland, we’re working to increase access to affordable home ownership and financial education for new and future homeowners.”

When it is completed, the Aberdeen house will be the 108th home built/rehabbed by Habitat Susquehanna. (It is located next door to the “Habi-Tech” house which was completed earlier this year.) The homebuyer is a woman with four children.

As is the case with every Habitat home, volunteers work side-by-side with the homebuyer who is required to contribute 250 hours of “sweat equity” for the construction of the home. The Habitat homebuyer also participates in mandatory financial literacy classes and will purchase the Habitat home through an affordable mortgage. The monthly payments will in turn go towards building more Habitat homes for others. November 1st will mark Habitat Susquehanna’s 25th anniversary.
