Textbook: Core Plus 3

Course Description: This is the third course in the series provides students with the opportunity to study reasoning strategies, geometric proofs, linear programming, triangle similarity and congruence, polynomials, quadratic and rational expressions, logarithmic and trigonometric functions. A TI-83 or higher graphing calculator is required.

Topic Outline:

Unit 1: Reasoning and proof develops student understanding of formal reasoning in geometric, algebraic, and statistical contexts and of basic principles that underlie those reasoning strategies.

Unit 2: Inequalities and linear programming develops student ability to reason both algebraically and graphically to solve inequalities in one and two variables. This unit introduces systems of inequalities in two variables, and develops a strategy for optimizing a linear function in two variables within a system of linear constraints on those variables.

Unit 3: Similarity and congruence extends student understanding of similarity and congruence and their ability to use those relationships to solve problems and to prove geometric assertions with and without the use of coordinates.

Classroom Rules:

• Be prepared – Students must bring the following to class everyday:

o Three ring binder

o Loose-leaf paper or notebook

o Pencils (no pens)

o Graphing Calculator (preferably TI-83 or TI-84)

• Be prompt – Students are expected to enter the classroom in a timely fashion, begin the Warm Up, and be seated in their assigned seats before the late bell rings.

• Be respectful – Students are expected to show respect to everyone by listening while others are talking, raising hands to be recognized, and respecting others’ property. Please always remember to keep hands, feet, negative talk, and objects to yourself.

• Be attentive – Students are expected to remain seated and pay attention while others are addressing the entire class.

• Be responsible – Students are expected to attend class every day, participate in class, complete assignments, and always give their best effort!

• Be ready – Come to class every day with an expectation to learn. Students are expected to listen attentively, take good notes, complete assignments, ask questions, and share in the learning process.

• Obey all school rules

Procedures:

• Entering the classroom – Students will enter the classroom on time and begin working on the day’s Warm Up.

• Leaving the classroom (bathroom/drink) – Students should use the bathroom or get a drink before class starts. Students may not leave the classroom to use the bathroom or get a drink in the first 15 minutes of class or the last 15 minutes of class.

• Make-up work (due to absence) – The responsibility to make up work lies with the student. Missed assignments must be completed and turned in within the number of absent days. For instance, if a student is absent for 2 days, that student has the following 2 days to turn in missed work. Assignments missed from an unexcused absence will not be given credit.

• Late work – Half credit will be given for assignments completed and handed in one day late, including homework. No credit will be given after one day late.

Grading Policy:

• Students’ grades will be based on their performance on tests, quizzes, homework, class work, projects, etc.

• Tests will assess an entire unit and be worth 100 points, while quizzes will assess part of a unit or a specific topic within a unit and will vary in point value.

• Homework is to be done at home, not in any class during the school day. Homework and class work will be graded on completion and effort.

• Marking period and semester grades will be calculated according to the Appoquinimink School District Grading Policy. Summative grades are weighted at 70%, and formative grades are weighted at 30%.
