4. GRAMMAR 21

eg20 non-action verbs

explanation: verbs not used in continuous forms

An example of the continuous form is: I am reading a book. (Sometimes it is called the "progressive" form.) Some verbs are never used in this form: believe, love, hate, prefer, imagine, understand, want, know, like, hear These are the most important ones; there are others, too, of course.

So, for example, you must never say: *I am understanding your question.* -> this is incorrect

Some other verbs can be used in the continuous form in one meaning, but not in another.

For example:

see - when it means "meet", it can be continuous; but you can only say: I can see your face. or (in an other meaning): I see your problem. (= I understand your problem.)

feel - when it means "to have an opinion" it can't be continuous; but it is OK to say I am feeling fine. ("I feel fine" is also correct.)

smell - when it means "to give out a smell or odour", it can't be continuous; but you can say: Why are you smelling your food? Is it bad? The same thing is true for "taste": You can only say: This soup tastes very good. But it is OK to say: I'm tasting this meat to see if it's OK.

think - when it means "to have an opinion", it can't be continuous; you can only say: I think Jim is ill. But you can say: What are you thinking about?

Follow these rules when you do the exercise below ...

Decide whether these sentences are correct or incorrect, and correct them if necessary:

1) Are you feeling cold?

2) I'm not believing in UFOs.

3) I can smell something in this room.

4) Are you seeing your boss tomorrow?

2. WRITING 2

Here are some tips for writing a letter:

1. Write your address in the top right-hand corner, but do not write your name above the address: your name comes at the end of the letter.

2. Write the date under your address. There are several correct ways for writing the date; for example, 18.4.2000, or 18/4/2000, or 18 April 2000, but the best is if you write the name of the month (April), not the number only (4).

3. Begin your letter with "Dear Sir(s)" or "Dear Sir or Madam" if you don't know the name of the person you are writing to.

4. You can put a comma (,) after "Dear ...", or write nothing. In American English, some people put a colon (:) here.

5. If you're writing to a woman, and you don't know if she is married or not, write "Ms": Dear Ms. Brown

6. At the end of the letter, write "Yours faithfully" if you wrote "Dear Sir" at the beginning; write "Yours" or "Yours sincerely" if you used the person's name ("Dear Mr. Brown").

7. If you're writing to a close friend or relative, you can use these expressions at the end: "Best wishes", "Love", "Best regards", "All the best" or "See you soon"

Now look at the sample letter below and do the exercise that follows.

Look at this sample letter:

3. WRITING 3

How to write a "thank you" letter.

It is the kind of letter that you write when you received something (for example, for your birthday), or when you want to thank somebody for something they did for you (for example, they invited you to a party or helped you).

The first paragraph

If it is a formal letter, you can begin like this:

I am writing to thank you for ... I would like to thank you for ...

If it is a letter to a friend or a close relative, you can write:

Thanks a lot for ... Thank you very much for ...

In each case, after "for" you can use a noun phrase or a verb in its "-ing" form:

Thanks a lot for your kind help. or Thanks a lot for helping me.

Always write one more sentence in the first paragraph. It can be about the present that you got:

It's just what I need! It's simply beautiful - I love it! It's my favourite colour!

(American English spelling: favorite color)

Or if it was a party, you can say how much you enjoyed yourself:

I had a wonderful time! It was really great! I enjoyed myself enormously!

Of course, you can write more here, not only these two sentences.

The second paragraph

In the next part of the letter, ask about the health of the person you are writing to, and also about their family.

I hope you are well. (OK, this is not really a question, but it's polite to write this.)

How is your family?

I hope your father is better now.

The last paragraph

You can use these phrases:

I look forward to seeing you again. (this is a bit formal)

I'm looking forward to seeing you. (more informal)

I hope you can come and visit me soon.

It is also polite to say thank you once again:

Thanks again,

Thank you very much for everything once again,

Now do the exercise below.

Complete the following letter with suitable words:

Dear Mary,

Thank _____ very much _____ the pullover you sent me _____ my birthday. It's _____! Blue is my _____ colour, and everybody says that it's very elegant. I'll _____ it when I _____ to Peter's party next weekend.

Yesterday I met my friend, Tom in the street. First he didn't see me because he was looking at a shop window, but when I stood in front of him, he was very happy.

"What are you doing here?" I asked him.

"I'm visiting my cousin. You know, he works at the post office." he answered.

"And how is your wife?"

"Thanks, she's OK now. She found a new job last month, and now she earns more than I do."

"Oh, really? But why did she need a new job? Didn't she like the office?"

"Two months ago her boss left the company, and they didn't like each other with her new boss. While she was looking for a new job, she met one of her old school friends, who wanted a new secretary. He gave her the job immediately! Her only problem is that she has to travel three quarters of an hour every day to get to work."

"But why doesn't she go to work by car? Didn't you have two cars when we met last time?"

"Yes, we did. But three weeks ago I had an accident. I was driving home from work when another car crashed into me. I was lucky that I didn't have to go to hospital, because he was driving at 70 mph."

"You were really very lucky then. I have to go back to work now. It was nice to meet you."

"Yes, and don't forget to give us a ring when you're in Brixton. You must come and visit us."

"OK, thanks. Bye."

"Bye."

Jane always gets up at six o'clock and goes to school at half past seven. But this morning she was late, and left home at quarter to eight. She arrived at the bus stop late, and missed the bus. "I won't be at the school at eight," she thought. "I know what I'll do. I'll go to the doctor." She turned back. At that moment, she met John, a boy in her class. "Where are you going?" he asked her. "I'm going to the doctor," she said. "When I got up, I didn't feel well, and now I have a headache." "You are lucky," he said. "I got up late this morning, missed the bus and now I'll be late for school. The history teacher will be very angry with me. You know, I was late last week, too." "Why didn't you get up in time? I always arrive at the school at quarter to eight. Do you remember last month? The history teacher was very angry, because Roger was late, and she wrote a letter to his mother. I think she'll write a letter to your mum, too. You are very stupid." "You are right. Anyway, I must go now. Bye." "Bye." Jane went to the doctor and the doctor gave her a prescription for some medicine. But she didn't want to go home, because her mother was at home. Then she saw a poster on the wall. It was for a film at the cinema. She looked at her watch. She had enough time to go there. She arrived at the cinema twenty minutes before the film. She bought her ticket and waited in the hall. Then a bus stopped in front of the cinema - she couldn't believe her eyes: her history teacher got off the bus, then her class. "What are you doing here, Jane?" her history teacher asked. Jane couldn't say a word. "We are coming to see a film for today's lesson. You can come with us. But I think I'll write a letter to your mother after the film."
