Course Description:

Banking Services II is the second level course in the Banking Services pathway within the Finance cluster. This course provides coverage of the fundamental principles of banking applications. The students will be introduced to the principles, theories and procedures of financial systems. The students will have the opportunity to specialize in this area of business by taking additional courses offered that specialize in Banking.

The central component of this course entails that students learn the operations, functions and customer service skills to participate in the school banking program. They may have the opportunity to interview for teller or customer service representative positions and work in the school bank. It is necessary that students have a computer background to include the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, as well as the basic ability to access and use the internet as technology is used throughout this course.

Course Objectives:

➢ Students will be able to describe the functions and value of money, understand the purpose of credit, and the legal responsibilities associated with financial exchanges.

➢ Students will identify ways in which banks generate profit and acquire knowledge of the credit process.

➢ Students will apply marketing techniques that are used to generate new business and maintain company image.

➢ Students will define bank products and services, understand customer needs to determine products and services and determine how financial service providers assist in financial goals.

➢ Students will learn to manage personal finances to achieve financial goals.

➢ Students will understand the lending fundamentals used to generate profitable and sound loans and review loan applications to determine if customers are creditworthy.

➢ Students will understand the significance and impact of federal and state laws/regulations on the banking industry.

➢ Students will utilize technology to perform responsibilities, to present reports, and apply communications skill to demonstrate understanding and to convey information.

Course Outcomes:

Students will engage in the learning process through applying business, accounting, and marketing strategies through the use of technology to solve real life problems and make sound decisions for their future. They will use higher order thinking skills to analyze and to develop a knowledge base that will allow them to process new information in the future. Formal and informal discussions will reinforce the basic foundational understanding.

At the end of this course, students will have the fundamental information they need to understand the business of banking and how the bank employee is part of the overall business. Students will engage in the learning process by utilizing their teller and customer service skills to process customer transactions, and participate in the operations and functions of branch banking. Students will know the banking system is the foundation of the world economy and how banking affects our daily lives.

Materials to be brought to class daily:

• Three ring binder with dividers

• Computer Storage Devise (thumb drive/flash drive)

• Loose-leaf paper

• Pencils, pens, highlighter

Student Expectations:

• Students are expected to abide by the Appoquinimink School District Code of Conduct at all times

• Be respectful-respect yourself, your classmates, your teacher, and property

• Be responsible-attend class every day, be punctual, complete assignments

• Be ready to learn-be prepared, be attentive, participate in class

Classroom Policies

• Be on time for class

• Work for the entire period

• Food should remain outside the classroom

• Use professional language

• Computers are for class work only

• Respect classroom property (tables, chairs, computers, walls, etc.)

• Be respectful to others (no teasing, hitting, etc.)

• Be respectful to teacher

Expectations for Teacher:

• I will be prepared every period

• I will provide engaging lessons

• I will give my best effort every period

• I will provide students with differentiated instruction to provide multiple opportunities for learning

• I will provide a safe and interactive learning environment

Procedures:

Students will begin each day with a warm-up activity. Essential questions will be presented to introduce the lesson, followed by instruction, practice and individual or collaborative group activities. Each class will end with a closure procedure. Prior to assessments review sessions will be planned.

Grading:

This course will implement the Appoquinimink Grading Policy:

Attendance:

Students are expected to be on time for class – in their seats by the bell. Any students that arrive after the bell MUST have a pass from another teacher, etc. Arriving to class without a written note will result in the student being issued an UNEXCUSED TARDY. Three unexcused tardies WILL result in a student being issued an assigned detention.

Absences:

Students that are absent for whatever reason miss valuable instruction, especially on a block schedule where classes are 90 minutes in length. It will be the responsibility of a student to request missed work. Additionally, assuming the absence is excused, a student will only be given make-up days based on the number of days absent (example: absent one day – one day will be given to complete missed work.) For unexcused absences, a student may complete missed work, but no credit will be awarded for the assignment/test, etc.

Technology Use:

Computers are strictly for instructional use. Students will adhere to the acceptable usage agreement stated on pages 74 through 77 of the student code of conduct. Disciplinary action will be enforced to any student not adhering to this policy.

Extra Help Availability: Extra help is available upon request, pending scheduling.
