Code 39

Code 39, sometimes referred to as 3 of 9, the original alphanumeric barcode, is now the de facto standard non-retail symbology. It is a discrete, self-checking, variable length symbology and may be printed using a wide variety of techniques.

Every Code 39 character has five bars and four spaces, making a total of nine elements. Of these nine elements, three are wide and six are narrow, making Code 39 a two-width code.

Forty-four characters comprise the Code 39 character set. They are A-Z, 0-9, and the characters minus (-), period (.), space ( ), asterisk (*), dollar sign ($),

slash (/), plus (+), and per cent sign (%). The asterisk is the start/stop character for each symbol and therefore may not be used inside a code.

In the following example of the Code 39 (asterisk) you will notice each bar or space is a single element and three elements of the nine are wide.

Rules

In order to use the True Type font you must follow the following simple rules.

1. The code for the Code 39 font must begin and end with an asterisk (*).

2. No characters other than the A-Z, 0-9, and the 7 special characters (-), (.), ($), (/), (+), and (%).

3. Since a space is not defined as a character, substitute a carat (^), or an underline (_) for each space.

4. Use this type face in 14 points or larger. Some scanners may have a problem with small type.
