For new and current homeowners, renovation can be an exciting task with great reward. Not only can DIY projects save you hundreds to thousands of dollars, but completing the project yourself offers a sense of accomplishment. If you are attempting to give the exterior of your home a new look or trying to reduce drafts and energy costs, installing replacement windows can be an option for the savvy DIYer. With research, excellent prep, and time commitment, you and your "in-house" renovation team can not only bring new life to your exterior, but accomplish a large project with success. The following are tips to help make your replacement window installation a success.

Overview Of Replacement Windows

Although you know you want to replace your windows, you may not know exactly what products and units you will need. Unlike full-frame windows, replacement windows are made to fit into existing window openings. There are three major types of replacement windows available: sash kits, pocket windows, and full-frame units. This guide will focus on full-frame window replacements. For this type of replacement to be viable, the existing window frame must be level and square.

Full replacement windows can be a challenge for the DIYer if these two criteria are not met. These windows are similar to inserts but have a complete frame that includes jambs and the windowsill. Choosing a full replacement window is very important if there is any part of the current window that has rotted.

Are you ready to start your window replacement journey? The following are some tips to make it go smoother.

Measuring

This is the first, and probably the most important, step in your replacement window project. If the measurements are done incorrectly, the entire project will be difficult or possibly need to be redone. Measure the inside width of the current window frame from jamb to jamb. Measure these three places: the top of the window, the bottom of the window, and the middle of the window. You will need to keep the smallest of these measurements. Next, you will need to measure the frame's height from the very top of the sill to the bottom jamb at the left, middle, and right. Remember to keep the smallest measurement handy. Now that you have checked the measurements, you need to check that the frame is square. To do this, measure from corner to corner on each side. If the measurements are less than ?" different, a replacement window will fit easily. If the difference is more than ?", you will likely need a full window replacement. Take all of these measurements to your local Home Outlet or Barton's store and determine the best window for your replacement. Our experiences store representatives will assist you*.

Window Prep

To insure the best installation and to help deter climate transfer, you will need to install insulation. Create holes, at a distance recommended for your specific window, with a drill. Next, you will take canned insulation and apply it into the pockets and jambs. Let the insulation set for the afternoon before beginning new work. After waiting for the insulation to set, you will begin caulking the window. The caulking should be placed inside the exterior casing with two beads in each group of caulking. Congratulations, you have now prepped your window opening for installation!

Window Installation

To begin installing the window, bring the entire window inside the home. Pick up the window and set the bottom window insert onto the sill and tip it into the opening. Be sure that the entire window is pressed into the opening tightly. Drive a screw loosely into the upper side jamb to connect the window to the frame. This will hold the window in place for you to continue the installation process.

*Note: Be sure to lock the sash.*

Now that the window is in the opening, you will need to insert your window shims to ensure the window opens, closes, and locks smoothly. Measure the new window diagonally on both sides and

use the window shims to make these measurements equal. A level should also be used to insure that the window is level and square, as well as plumb. Once these measurements are the same, you can screw the window into place through the pre-drilled holes provided.

*Bonus Tip: Put a temporary shim between the window and the jamb to avoid bending the frame.*

Cut the shims down so they are flush with the window. You have now successfully installed your window! Caulk any gaps you may see, or cover with foam rubber. Prime and paint or stain the interior of the window, sash, and frame.
