EMPLOYMENT HISTORY

Feb 2011 – May 2012 Sky News, British Sky Broadcasting, London UK

Sky News is the Breaking News branch of British Sky Broadcasting (BSkyB). With 24/7 News coverage around the world, this makes Sky News one of the most heavily impacted division of BSkyB.

Technical Architect (Virtualization)

Working within a team of 10 developers at Sky News, my role was to architect a new infrastructure for the future of the platform which involved the following:

Managing the expenditure of the Infrastructure project stream within the overarching project.

Leading the direction of Systems Architecture within a team of 14 people (Including a mix of business owners, agile Java developers and product testers)

Design/Architect/Manage the implementation of the new solution through the entire project life cycle.

Migrate the team’s existing infrastructure from VMware vSphere 4.5 to Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization.

Deliver a Proof of Concept on the technologies to be used for the production solution. This included a usable Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization / Satellite installation to demonstrate and train the team on how the solution will work and simplify procedures.

Liaise with Suppliers throughout the deployment process to ensure that all parties are on side and in a position to, as a team, to deliver a working solution which addresses all business and team needs.

Creating a simplified interface for the development teams to provision new systems within the new private cloud(s). Utilizing a mixture of BASH, Python and API scripting, this was delivered to allow the team to work towards the “KISS” principle for management over systems deployments.

Implement the production cloud solution which is now a fully functioning “Active/Active” datacentre implementation where even a complete datacentre outage does not result in any service outage to customers or business units.

Implement a means to allow the team to automatically monitor all new systems being implemented through Icinga(Nagios) so there would never be any systems that slip between the cracks of Systems checks.

Achievements: Through my work within Sky News, my solution of delivering “Active / Active” datacentres’ with HP and Red Hat solutions, is / has already started to become the new standard platform model for many other teams within Sky. The successful end solution is a very new concept, not only within Sky but within the industry.

Provide Architectural guidance on managing Windows Active Directory Infrastructure across 53 countries with a user base in the many thousands.

Recommend best practices with deploying of SOE Builds to allow central control of remote assets.

Recommend best practices on Security aspects ranging from effective user management with permissions, right through to Active Directory management by service desk support teams.

Provide Solution Outline documentation to clearly state the areas of concern, risk and to show where the resulting solution will address those issues.

Leading by example in my recommendations, training specific staff where required to allow all my recommendations to be understood and implemented both today and in the future.

Initially starting out at Red Bee with a SAN migration, which was initiated with SAN planning and designs, installations and targeted at enhancing Database performance and access across several datacentres.

Monitor the existing infrastructure and ensure as near 100% uptime as possible. Supporting platforms of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 and 5 as well as Windows 2003 Server running on HP Proliant servers.

Manage all system/infrastructure changes within the organisation to ensure that all work is done quickly, efficiently and confirming to all change control procedures.

Manage a continuously growing Nagios installation monitoring all forms of hardware and software. Items being monitored include Uptime, hardware utilisation and health, etc.

Design, Build, test and deploy new technologies. This has included several implementations of Red Hat Cluster Suite and virtualization installations.

Provide solutions to identified problems within the infrastructure. Ranging from integration between all Red Hat and Windows Active Directory for single sign on purposes for several platforms.

Achievements:

Once finished the HP MSA2000 SAN deployments, I was approached by representatives from HP UK and EMEA to speak at a Press Conference for upcoming technologies.

Maintain a thorough and precise backup regime through the use of Veritas NetBackup, used on both Solaris and Windows Server platforms.

Update and configure Nagios network monitoring for all servers, services and switches to be displayed on a large plasma screen to show current statistics of network resources.

Shell scripting using bash and VBScript where required. Scripts written in VBScript were designed for implementation into Group Policy. Once example was a script that was created to remove Symantec Anti-virus as it was no longer vendor supported.

Achievements:

My project of automating what Symantec considered an unsupported upgrade path was silently deployed and was successful in rolling out to a client machine base of 500 computers.
