Algebra Notes SOL 4.22

• Several different properties of arithmetic relationships remain true regardless of the numbers.

• Letters will be used instead of numbers and algebra is finding the value of the letter. Any letter can be used.

• The commutative property for addition states that changing the order of the addends does not affect the sum (e.g., 4 + 3 = 3 + 4).

• Similarly, the commutative property for multiplication states that changing the order of the factors does not affect the product (e.g., 2 ( 3 = 3 ( 2).

• The associative property for addition states that the sum stays the same when the grouping of addends is changed [e.g., 15 + (35 + 16) = (15 + 35) + 16].

• The associative property for multiplication states that the product stays the same when the grouping of factors is changed [e.g., 6 ( (3 ( 5) = (6 ( 3) ( 5].

• Recognize that the equals sign (=) relates equivalent quantities. Meaning both sides of the equal sign has to equal exactly the same amount!

• Write number sentences (equations) to represent equivalent mathematical relationships.

o Examples: 4 ( 3 = 2 ( 6

o 6 X ___ = 3 X 8

o Now write three of your own…check with your neighbor to see if you are correct.

• Identify number sentences that show appropriate use of the equals sign.

o Which is correct or incorrect and why?

1. 6 X 5 = 5 X 7

2. __ X 4 = 8 X 3

3. 12 ÷ 2 = 6 X __

Basic Algebra Problems: You’re just filling in the blank or finding the value of the letter.

(Hint: use your answers to help find the value of n.)

1. 14 + n - 2 = 18

a. 4

b. 6

c. 8

d. 10

2. (4 X 2) + 5 = n

a. 9

b. 11
