Instructor: Corrie Kezer E-mail: ckezer@roguecc.edu

Prerequisites: CHEM 104 recommended Website:

Course Description: Covers basic anatomy and physiology for Medical Office Assistant, Mental Health Technician, Massage Therapy, Medical Assistant, Medical Transcription, and Practical Nursing. Includes body organization, basic chemistry, cell structure and function, tissues, integumentary system, skeletal system, muscular system, and nervous system. Dissection required.

Course Goals: Having successfully completed the course the student will be able to:

1. Develop a “problem solving” and critical thinking approach to problems in anatomy and physiology.

2. To be able to explain, diagram and/or describe the following:

a. the functional aspects of cell structure.

b. basic chemical principles of cell function.

c. The basic types of tissues and their function.

d. The relationship between cells, tissues, and organs.

e. The types of muscle tissue and how muscles contract.

f. Nerve cell structure and function.

g. Anatomy and physiology of the nervous system.

h. Anatomy and physiology of the skeletal system.

i. Anatomy and physiology of the integumentary system.

j. Anatomy and physiology of the muscular system.

Objectives will be met through the following methods of evaluation:

1. Lecture Exams: There will be three exams each worth 100 pts. The exams are tentatively scheduled for: 7/26, 8/9, 8/30. Exams may be made up with prior consent of the instructor. Make-up exams will be in essay format.

2. Lecture Quizzes: There will be a take home quiz given for every chapter covered, and it will be due on the day we begin that chapter. The goal for this is to get you to read the topics before they are covered in lecture. Late lecture quizzes will not be accepted.

3. Lab:

a. There will be two lab exams during the quarter, each worth 100 pts. There will be no opportunity for making up missed lab exams or labs. Students finding it unavoidable to miss an exam should contact me prior to the regularly scheduled exam if at all possible. The lab exams are tentatively scheduled for: 8/9 and 8/30.

b. At the beginning of each week’s lab section, there will be a quiz that will cover the previous week’s lab material, and be worth 10 pts. These quizzes may be taken in groups no larger than two students.

c. Lab assignments from the previous lab will be due at the beginning of each lab. Lab attendance is required since lab sessions cannot be made up. The student is free to leave when the lab has been completed and the work station has been properly cleaned. Failure to attend lab will result in a failing grade for the course. Late lab assignments will not be accepted.

Attendance & Drop Policy:

Human Anatomy is a difficult course. Students who attend class only when they feel like it will have a difficult time succeeding in this course. Students must sign the attendance sheet each day of lecture and lab to document their presence. It is the student’s responsibility to make sure the attendance sheet is signed.

Monday: 4:30 to 6:00

Wednesday: 4:30 to 6:00

other times by appointment

Required Materials:

*Marieb, Elaine N., Essentials of Human Anatomy & Physiology, 10th Ed. Text

*Marieb, Elaine N., Essentials of Anatomy and Physiology, 5th Ed. Lab Manual

Students with Disabilities Act:

Any student who feels that she or he may need an academic accommodation for any disability; such as vision, hearing, orthopedic, learning disabilities, psychological or other medical conditions, should make an appointment with the Support Services Office. (Located in the Wiseman Tutoring Center on the Redwood Campus or Wards/G-207 at the Riverside Campus.)

Studying:

Anatomy and Physiology is a challenging and involved study which requires a considerable effort on the part of the student. Students should review their notes and do their reading daily. Nothing can take the place of good study habits. The following is a list of helpful hints that may assist you:

1. Read the text before the material is covered in class.

2. While reading, if you do not understand something in the text, put a question mark next to it. If lecture does not clear it up, ASK QUESTIONS.

3. Write down new or difficult words on 3X5 cards with the definitions or concepts on the back. Carry the cards with you – use flash cards.

4. Carefully study diagrams and illustrations.

5. Use markers to highlight or underline key ideas while reading.

6. Summarize what you have read. After finishing a paragraph try and restate the main ideas in your own words.

7. Form study groups with your classmates and friends.

8. Tape record lectures for further review and to fill in your notes.

9. Take good notes!

10. Review constantly. Do the reading, flash cards, and review question on a daily basis.

DO NOT CRAM FOR EXAMS!

11. Answer the review questions at the end of the chapter.

12. Use visual memory, try and build a visual picture or mental model of what is discussed or read.

13. Use mnemonic devices to help you remember material. Make up your own.

14. Always ask why, dive deeper to get a complete understanding of the topics.

*If you feel you are struggling with the material, please come and get help soon. I will do what I can to help you succeed in this class. This course moves quickly, please don’t wait to come and see me*

Lab Participation Policy:

Students should be aware that labs require the use of bodily fluids and preserved specimens for dissection. Students must treat all dissection specimens with respect and observe universal precautions at all times when handling human bodily fluids.

Statement of Cheating:

CHEATING AND PLAGIARISM are violations of the College policy and are considered serious offenses. The Department of Biological Sciences takes all incidents of academic dishonesty seriously and acts accordingly, including a failing grade for the course or expulsion from the College.
