356:152 Discussion and Presentation SkillsFall Semester 2014Instructor: Place: Phone: Time:E-mail: Office Hours: Course OverviewDiscussion and Presentation Skills (356:152) offers ESL undergraduate students currently enrolled in EAD I (356:155 English as Academic Discourse I) or EAD II (356:156 English as Academic Discourse II) the opportunity to improve their English speaking, listening, note-taking and presentation skills. Through individual and collaborative projects, students will learn how to plan oral presentations, create and use power point slides and other visual aids, delegate roles for class presentations, answer audience questions and gain greater confidence when speaking in front of a group. Discussion and Presentation Skills is a one-credit graded course which counts toward graduation. The class meets one day a week (80-minute period) for 11 consecutive weeks starting the second week of the semester. Required MaterialsA pocketed folder to hold all assignments, handouts, and other class materials.A USB drive to store all class work.Course AssignmentsInterview/Introduction: Working in pairs, students will develop 5-6 questions and then conduct interviews with each other. At the next class, each pair will exchange a prepared summary of the interview as well as introduce each other to the entire class, fielding any follow-up questions. (10 points)Note Taking/Generating Questions: A guest lecturer will conduct a power point presentation. Each student will take notes during the short lecture and ask the presenter questions. Each student will type a summary of the notes to be handed in for a grade at the next class. (10 points)Instructive Presentation with Power Point: Each student will prepare and deliver a five-minute presentation that covers a topic or concept learned in another Rutgers University course, accompanied by a Power Point presentation. A class period will cover Power Point instruction so that students may learn how to create and use Power Point slides as an effective visual aid. The Power Point presentation must be included in the student’s portfolio. After the presentation, the student will field questions from the audience. Students will also complete an evaluation of the Instructive Presentation. (Oral Presentation = 30 points; Power Point slides = 10 points)Panel Assignment: The class will be divided into panels (3-4 students) and each panel will debate or conduct an in-depth discussion on a topic of the group's choosing. The group will delegate responsibilities, research the topic, prepare remarks to deliver to the class, and anticipate questions that may be posed. (Group work = 25 points; Individual contribution = 15 points)Class/University Policies After one (1) absence a student is at risk of failing the course. Since so much of this class depends on group work, attending class is imperative. If a student comes to class 20 minutes late, it will count as a partial absence; after 20 minutes, the student will be charged with an absence. Students must self report absences: and note the date/s and reason for the absence/s. An email will automatically be sent to your instructor. The absence will only be excused if there are extenuating circumstances. Because of our limited class time, no extensions on assignment due dates can be made, so please plan accordingly. Please turn off all electronic devices when you come to class as a courtesy to everyone. DO NOT use electronic translators to convert your work to English. Use an English dictionary to look up words and their synonyms. Please take note of your instructor’s office hours. Instructors will also see students by appointment. Learning how to communicate with your instructor is an important step. The class meets in both the classroom and the computer lab. Be sure to know where you need to be by reviewing the class plan on Sakai each week. When the class meets in the computer lab, bring your work saved on a USB drive and email the file to yourself after revision. All relevant class materials will appear on Sakai as EAD Discussion and Presentation F14. Please check your Rutgers email and the Sakai site frequently for updates and important information regarding the class Plagiarism: Follow Rutgers University policies on plagiarism. Your instructor will review Academic Integrity with you at the first class meeting and also give you handouts on this important topic, including the Rutgers Plagiarism Policy and the consequences for anyone who cheats or plagiarizes. The best policy: trust your writing abilities and do your own work.
