Course Outline

General Course Overview:

Course Description: This course is designed to introduce students to Adobe Flash CS3. Students will learn the basic concepts and techniques for designing and creating Flash content for the Web. Students will build three projects that will help them understand rich media design as well as develop the technical skills needed to implement the designs. As a culminating project, students will design and create an authentic Flash project.

Prerequisites: Basic Computer Skills

Course Information: This course is a ½ credit course and will occur every other day over the course of a semester.

Course Goals:

Every student will have the opportunity to:

1. Learn the basic Flash features for drawing and animating at their own pace.

2. Create authentic Flash projects that incorporate drawing, animation, interaction, and multimedia elements.

3. Participate in class discussion and activities.

4. Work as a team to complete real-world Flash projects.

5. Plan and create a meaningful final project.

Essential Student Materials:

1. Every student will need to supply their own binder with pockets to keep printed material and any notes or materials they deem necessary.

2. Internet Access

3. Adobe Flash 8 or higher software.

4. Macromedia Studio 8 Step-by-Step Textbook by Dharkar, Pickle, Tapley, Heins

Course Objectives:

The student will use Adobe Flash to:

• Follow a design document and storyboard to define the properties of an animated billboard.

• Draw and animate simple shapes and text to create an animated billboard for a Web site.

• Follow a design document and storyboard to produce an online documentary.

• Use Flash to simulate film-style techniques and effects to tell a story.

• Create user-friendly navigation and features that provide ongoing feedback and put the audience in control of their online experience.

• Follow a design document and storyboard to produce an online gallery of video clips.

• Create Flash Video (FLV) files and prepare video for display on the Web.

• Learn methods for improving Flash performance by storing and accessing content outside the main FLA document.

• Ensure that Flash documents are readable, usable, and accessible for the entire target audience.

Assignments:

1. Reading of select materials.

2. Watching and following along with video tutorials on Flash.

3. Written Assignments may include:

a. Answering questions pertaining to projects, tutorials, and assignments.

b. Quizzes

c. Planning and Storyboarding Flash projects.

4. Flash projects which reinforce concepts learned during class.

5. Class participation which may include:

a. Bell Ringer Activities

b. Closure Activities

c. Completing assignments on time

d. Staying on task during class time

e. Oral presentations

f. Collaborative Activities

g. Attendance and Tardiness

h. Class discussions

Methods of Evaluating Objectives:

1. Weekly grade (50% of final grade) will be given based on a rubric that will assess the following:

a. Periodic quizzes/assignments

b. Teacher observation of students’ effort and ability to stay on task during class.

c. Student work (.fla and .swf files students create)

2. Team Project (25% of final grade)
