Notes on Accent Marks
Every word has a stressed syllable (sílaba tónica). For example, the word español stresses the last syllable. Word endings and written accents (tildes) provide a predictable guide to stressed syllables in Spanish, allowing you to read any word correctly.
Basic Rules for the Usage of Accents
Rule 1 ( Words that end in a vowel, ‘n’, or ‘s’ stress the next-to-last syllable: clase, examen, mesas.
Rule 2 ( Words that end in a consonant other than ‘n’ or ‘s’ stress the last syllable: bondad, papel, cantar.
Rule 3 ( Words that do not follow the above rules carry a written accent (only on a vowel) to show which syllable is stressed: café, exámenes, árbol.
Practice 1: The following words do not need the ‘tilde’. Underline the “sílaba tónica” using Rules 1 and 2 of the “Basic Rules for the Usage of Accents”.
e li mi nar co ci na cue llo
gra cias va rios i de a
fies ta al co hol so cie dad
pa cien cia ai re eu ro pe os
ciu dad fre cuen te suer te
According to the “Basic Rules for the Usage of Accents”, you need two criteria to decide whether a word needs a ‘tilde’ or not: a) its ending, & b) which syllable is stressed.
Example: The word “región" needs a ‘tilde’ because: a) it ends with ‘n’, but b) the penultimate (next-to-last) syllable is not stressed. The word “regiones" does not need a ‘tilde’ because: a) it ends with ‘s’, and b) the penultimate syllable is stressed.
Practice 2: The “sílaba tónica” is underlined. Write the ‘tilde’ (written accent mark) if it is necessary (only on the stressed vowel).
