Ways Parents Can Encourage Personal Progress

Ways Parents Can Encourage Personal Progress

Be available for Personal Progress needs—The young women are encouraged to counsel with their parents about goals, and to report to them when completing goals or projects.

Read through the Personal Progress Book so that you are familiar with the program.

Pray for your daughter to have a desire to complete the Personal Progress Program and Pray for her success as she plans and carries our goals and projects.

Encourage your daughter to work on Personal Progress at a steady pace. Make it a regular point of discussion in your home.

Speak positively about Personal Progress.

Encourage your daughter to attend her monthly Personal Progress activities and to take her scriptures and Personal Progress book with her.

Discuss Personal Progress in Family Council meetings.

Set and complete goals as a family so that goal-setting is familiar to your daughter.

Dads, ask your daughter about Personal Progress in a Personal Priesthood Interview (PPI) with them.

Occasionally reward your daughter’s progress with a special treat.

Keep your daughter’s Personal Progress sheet in plain sight as a constant reminder.**

Talk about Personal Progress at Family Home Evening or at family meals.

Have a daddy/daughter or mother/daughter Personal Progress date. Be creative!

On road trips encourage Personal Progress to pass the time.

Have a Personal Progress “Ice Cream Interview” and discuss progress over your favorite frozen treat.

Host a Personal Progress Party for your daughter and her friends—help them complete a goal at the party.

Have your daughter explain a goal she is working on to the family, then as a family encourage her to complete it. When she finishes, reward the entire family!

Write notes of encouragement to your daughter and put them in creative places.

Have a meal centered on Personal Progress. Serve your daughter’s favorite food.

Watch for our monthly newsletter for the Personal Progress drawing date and remind her to be prepared for that drawing by completing her goals. Each month we hold a Personal Progress Drawing--usually at the beginning of the month.  It is for girls who have completed value experiences or projects during the previous month.  When they have reported their Personal Progress to a YW leader, the leader gives them a drawing slip for completed goals and projects.  They receive 1 slip for each completed value experience and 2 slips for a completed project.  The YW who have received their Young Womanhood Recognition can also be included in the drawing.  If they are working on "continuing progress" from page 64 of the Personal Progress book they can also receive drawing slips.  We allow them a maximum of 4 slips per month--when they report to a YW leader about their efforts.  The drawing prize is a $5 gift card (we have done Cold Stone Creamery, Kohl's, Bath and Body Works, etc.).  The drawing has increased the amount of Personal Progress completion in our ward drastically.  The girls LOVE it!  I always make the prize a surprise, and sometimes I throw in a little something extra (like a king size candy bar) to keep it fresh--they never know what they are going to get, so they don't ever want to miss having their name in the drawing bag! This year I am planning to hold all of the slips from the monthly drawings and have a "grand prize" drawing in December.
