Last day of school

Dear Bear Creek Families,

We would like to wish you a very happy and safe summer.  Please read every day.  Look for opportunities to count and think mathematically. Enjoy the outdoors and practice Green habits of recycling, reducing and re-using.  Think about healthy nutrition options and exercise daily.  We will be located at General John Stricker for the summer (June 15-August).  Our summer newsletter will come out mid-late August.  Please be on the look-out for it and save the envelope- it will have a number that corresponds to your child’s homeroom.  We will see some of you at our Summer program and the rest of you for our Back to School Meet and Greet.

Please be vigilant of our school.  If you see vandalism or destruction of property please call the authorities.  We are asking you to be on watch while we are absent!

Have a wonderful summer.

From the Cafeteria

Just a reminder that all money on your child’s lunch account, a positive or negative balance, will follow to next year as long as your child remains enrolled in a Baltimore County Public School.

What’s New with You….

Kindergarten

The kindergarten classes had an awesome time at the Baltimore Zoo.  The next few weeks are busy so please keep the Kindergarten schedule we sent out handy so your child does not miss anything.     We will finish up the year with teen numbers in Math, our Pushes & Pulls unit in Science, and our Panda Kindergarten story in Language Arts.  We are excited that the children are well prepared for first grade but want parents to know the importance of keeping skills fresh over the summer.  Please join the public library summer reading program and practice basic skills DAILY!   Read, write, and count each day.  Please have a fun and safe summer!

Grade One

The school year has come to an end and we are sad to see our students go, but so happy to see them move onto the next grade! All of our students have made so much progress throughout the year. They have gained so many reading and math skills that they can use in their future endeavers. First grade picnic is June 2 and family is invited to attend the fun festivities! Throughout the summer, remember to read with your child to help them maintain their reading skills and are ready for when school begins again next year. There are many fun games and activities that can be incorporated outside to continue the learning process. Have a fantastic summer and enjoy your time with your kiddos!

Grade Two

It is hard to believe that this school year is almost over! We are so proud of how much progress our second graders have made since August. As the end of the year approaches, please be on the lookout for information regarding important end of the year events.

The last reading unit we will learn about mysteries! We will read a mystery titled, The Panda Puzzle, and we will create detective notebooks to help us identify the elements of a mystery. Ask your student about the clues they’ve discovered in the story so far!

In math, we are working on a unit called Partners, Teams, and Paper Clips. In this unit, students continue to work toward fluency with addition and subtraction up to 100. Students will explore what happens when they add even and odd numbers. We are also introducing concepts of measuring length and time. At home, you can talk about the length of objects you see when you are together, compare the height of family members, and practice measuring objects with a ruler or measuring tape.

It is important for our second graders to remain respectful, responsible, and ready for the remainder of the year. Please continue to encourage the 3Rs at home. Thank you for all of your support this year!

Grade Three

Third graders have completed PARCC testing for ELA and Math.  We are in our final units for both ELA and Math.  In ELA, the students are reading a variety of Roald Dahl books while focusing on story plot lines, adjectives, and character motivation based on the characters words and actions.  In Math, we are focusing on Geometry.  The students have worked with telling time, determining elapsed time, measurements, working with quadrilaterals, and determining area and perimeter in real world situations.

As the year comes to a close, we would like to remind you to continue working with your child on their multiplication facts, reading an analog clock, and of course, reading some great books.  The 3rd grade teachers have truly enjoyed working with our students this year.  Have a great summer!

Grade Four

As the school year dwindles and our fourth grade students are preparing to become fifth graders, we’d like to take a few moments to emphasize the importance of reading during your summer break.

Summer shouldn't mean taking a break from learning, especially when it comes to reading. Studies show that most students experience a loss of reading skills over the summer months, but children who continue to read actually gain skills. During the summer parents can help children sustain (and even bolster) reading skills, strengthen their vocabulary and reinforce the benefits of reading for enjoyment.

Remember that children need free time, away from structured academic learning, and the summer is the perfect time to relax and enjoy the pleasures of childhood. So summer reading should be fun. The following are a few tips to make summer reading enjoyable for your children:

Read aloud together with your child every day. Make it fun by reading outdoors - on the front steps, patio, at the beach or park. Also, let your children read to you.

Set a good example!  Turn off the TV and have family reading time (including mom and dad).

Let kids choose what they want to read, and every so often, read the same book your child is reading and discuss it.

Buy books on tape or check them out at the library

As you go through the day - cooking, gardening, grocery shopping, playing games - utilize this time as an opportunity to engage in verbal word play, vocabulary building, recognizing new and familiar words or attaching meaning to words and sentences.

Take your children to the library regularly. Baltimore County Public Libraries have the Sneaks reading program that is a great incentive for summer reading.

Subscribe, in your child's name, to magazines like Sports Illustrated for Kids, Highlights for Children, or National Geographic World. Encourage older children to read the newspaper as a way of keeping up the reading habit over the summer and enhancing a growing vocabulary. Ask them what they think about what they've read, and listen to what they say.

Have a healthy and safe summer!

Mrs. Caron, Mrs. Goldenberg and Mrs. Metzbower

Have a wonderful summer and best of luck in middle school next year!

Ms. Boller

We are excited to wrap up the year! Students have worked very hard this year and have made a ton of progress. With Junefest coming up we have been practicing “purchasing” items using play tickets and money. Students have the opportunity to practice the life skill of shopping. We are using different counting strategies to help us with this skill. Students have been showing their knowledge of skip counting to do so. In Reading, we have been focusing on showing our attention to a story for the entire duration of the story by following along with the reader. Continue to practice these important skills at home.

Mrs. Winkler

The students in room 24 have been studying about animals all year in reading and science.  They had a fun experience going to the Maryland Zoo to see all of the animals they have learned about!

Ms. Otterbein

As the year comes to an end, it is great to look back and see the progress each of the student’s in room 17 has made. They have worked incredibly hard academically, socially, and behaviorally. We have been finishing up our year by working on the multiple skills in reading that we’ve worked on throughout the year. We have been using fun read-aloud’s and this is something that you can work on over the summer! In math, we are ending the year with data analysis and reiterating our addition and subtraction skills. Please continue to work on these skills, as well as money, over the summer. Continue to model and have them show their 3 R’s over the summer!
