Survey results and programming

The board began by reviewing the 2012 Fall Survey results and had a discussion on specific comments and general responses. Over all the support for WTIP remains strong and people feel connected to our community because of WTIP’s programming and engagement. Comment made by Bill that WTIP has played a huge role in creating conversation on issues and reducing the polarization and the rancor in our community/county around contentious issues.

WTIP’s local news programming is a strength. Daybreak is well listened too and people like the snippets of national and regional news featured on this program along with the local news. All agree that local, local, local should be the main focus, from recognizing new businesses in the county to features about stories that pertain to our every day lives. One suggestion was a series on services and living situations for Cook County’s aging population that want to remain in the homes and community. Also, end of life issues - Ways to live gracefully and die with dignity. Bill mentioned his mother is a “guinea pig” for a program for our clinic, providing sensors in her home that monitor her movement and activities. This could be a great feature for WTIP’s news department.

Discussion of possible programming brought the following comments:

• Renaming the AM and PM Community Calendar program is a good idea

• The Youth Radio Project is fantastic, bringing in younger listeners

• Younger people do not like David Dye

• Youth Radio could focus on the various kinds of careers that new high school graduates may want to consider (outside of our area)

• Swing Session is much beloved to a segment of our population

• Agreement that Swing Session does cause many listeners to turn off radio

The web site is appealing but hard to navigate. There are areas for improvement

• There needs to be a search function

• Some are having trouble with accessing the live stream

• Drop down menus are difficult. Can not scroll down on Ipad and newer devices

• Content needs to be more accessible and easier to find

WTIP and CCVB could establish a stronger relationship in promoting Cook County. Working together would strengthen both organizations. One CAB member believes CCVB has created/publicizes more events than are mentioned on WTIP.

Community Issues Focus

Board believes that WTIP does an excellent job in bringing forth relevant community issues and creating programming around them. Call in programs are good but do not get the public input/call in factor that would be optimal. Suggested topics would be local food production, local energy production and active living for seniors. Discussion about the success of the Karmann/Abasz project in the Silver Bay business park – fish farming and food raising. One board member mentioned that Commissioner Martinson had suggested a similar use for the Grand Marais pool building once the new community center was in operation.

Future Planning

Discussion on the need for WTIP to replace it’s aging antenna and transmitter and what funding may be available.

Board member brought up the subject on how ideal it would be to build a new state of the art studio for musical performances and recording. He believes it would be a boon to the area.
