SITE DESCRIPTION: The Brevard Health Alliance is county’s only Federally Qualified Health Center. The organization provides extensive primary health care services to Brevard County residents regardless of their ability to pay for those services. Offering services on a sliding fee scale, BHA provides primary care service, limited dental services, diagnostic services, case management services, medication assistance services and specialty referrals to the area’s economically disadvantaged residents. The Integrated Behavioral Healthcare Program was designed through a partnership between BHA and Florida Tech’s School of Psychology to provide integrated behavioral health services to underserved and disadvantaged populations in a Federally Qualified Health Center.

A. Population Served – Primary care clinic patients of all ages with problems related to behavioral health issues, substance abuse, chronic illness(es), and/or treatment adherence.

B. Objective – Students will obtain the requisite knowledge, skills, and attitudes to serve as an effective interdisciplinary team members who can provide evidence-based behavioral health services in an integrated care environment.

C. Duties/Services Offered –

1. Conduct brief screenings and assessments

2. Consult with medical providers and other treatment team members

3. Develop and document integrated treatment plans in conjunction with patient and other team members

4. Effectively implement and document behavioral health interventions/patient progress

5. Follow-up patients and refer to appropriate community resources

6. Develop/present interdisciplinary staff training and/or disease management groups

Additional opportunities are available for students who have completed two semesters in one of the above clinics to:

• Serve as a peer supervisor

• Provide services to homeless patients on BHA’s mobile unit

• Provide services to children and parents at BHA’s Malabar Pediatrics Clinic

SUPERVISION: Students will participate in a minimum of two hours of group supervision per week from a licensed psychologist supervisor. Students will also receive ongoing supervision through review of clinical documentation and onsite case consultation. Additional supervision is available as needed and upon request. Licensed psychologists on BHA staff provide on-site supervision and participate in case review/supervision. Peer supervisors may also provide additional clinical and administrative supervision.

PREREQUISITES:

• PSY5108 – Health Psychology; PSY6570 – Clinical Applications in Behavioral Healthcare

• Permission of supervisors

NUMBER OF POSITIONS AND REIMBURSEMENT: 4 – 8 positions, unpaid

TIME COMMITMENT: For first two semester commitment: 6 credit hours (two days/week in clinic. Advanced placement hours are negotiable.

NECESSARY ACTIONS: Students are expected to complete interdisciplinary training and employee orientation sessions, along with necessary credentialing prior to beginning the practicum.
