A Message from Mrs. Derrien

Dear Chatsworth Families,

October is already upon us and it is hard to believe that the first month of school is officially completed. Your child has now settled into his/her classroom. Classroom routines and expectations are firmly in place allowing our teachers to provide a comprehensive and rigorous instructional program on a daily basis. Excellent schools focus on increasing student achievement. Truly successful schools not only have a competent staff but also have interested and involved parents. We are fortunate at Chatsworth to have just that.

We invite you to join us on Monday, October 24, for our first "Epic Build Showcase." Our students will have the opportunity to share their "First Epic Build" Projects with fellow students, parents, and special guests. The Showcase is our culminating event for our first cycle of computer science instruction for the 2016-17 school year. Students from kindergarten through fifth grade are creating grade level Epic Build projects or games for the Showcase. The Epic Build Project is aligned to the computer science concepts and skills taught during the first marking period. Our students are so excited about the infusion of computer science into their daily instruction, the energy throughout the school is incredible! We look forward to parent visitation during our showcase on Monday, October 24, 2016.

Team BCPS Bullying Prevention Week -- October 4 - October 7

Throughout the first week of October, our students and staff will participate in discussions and activities that will demonstrate unity with BCPS around the issues of bullying. Anti-bullying programs have a twofold emphasis. First, all students take responsibility to identify any bullying behavior and either stand up to the person engaged in bullying behavior or get the assistance of adults to deal with the behavior. The second task is to foster the atmosphere of positive interactions in the school. For the program this year, each day of the week has a theme and activities aimed at creating an environment where all students can feel safe and welcomed. Students are encouraged to wear the color of the day throughout the week to show their support: Tuesday: Equity, wear Green; Wednesday: Empathy, wear Yellow; Thursday: Respect, wear Red; Friday: Positivity, wear Purple

Kids Helping Kids Food and Funds Drive -- October 3 - 28

For almost 30 years, the Kids Helping Kids anti-hunger campaign has mobilized students in Maryland schools to raise food and funds for their hungry peers across the state. Participation in the program teaches children valuable lessons about hunger, engages them in giving, and shows them that they have the power to make a difference in their community. This program, co-managed by the Maryland Food Bank and Harvest for the Hungry, brought in more than $100,000 and 420,000 pounds of food for local food banks last year. Food and funds collected are donated to community food banks for distribution to soup kitchens, pantries, and shelters. The Chatsworth School has their own virtual food drive set up at: fooddrive.chatsworthes Students can start bringing in non-perishable food items starting Oct.4th.

Red Ribbon Week -- October 24 - October 28

The Red Ribbon Campaign is the oldest and largest drug prevention program in the nation reaching millions of young people during Red Ribbon Week. This year, Red Ribbon Week's theme is You Only Live Once: Be Drug FreeTM. DID YOU KNOW? Children of parents who talk to their teens regularly about drugs are 42% less likely to use drugs than those who don't; yet, only a quarter of teens report having these conversations. Visit to learn more about Red Ribbon Week? and get tips for talking to your kids about drugs.

Read all about it!

Creating Home Libraries One of the most exciting experiences for any reader is going to the library! So imagine how wonderful it must for a child to have a library in their own home!! Whether it be a room, a part of a child's bedroom, or an interesting nook or corner, collecting books and magazines in a special place for your child to relax and read is so important. The collection can be changed periodically as text has been read, keeping favorites on the shelf of course. Let your child help with ideas on book shelves, comfortable seating and lighting. This special space becomes a favorite place to go on a great reading adventure!
