Message from Principal Tricia Rueter

Dear Pinewood Families,

These first two months of school have proven to be full of excitement and success as students and teachers work towards establishing routines and expectations for a rewarding and productive school year. We appreciate your support in preparing your children for school each day by getting them to school on time and ready to learn. We also appreciate your support in completing all emergency contact forms and returning them in a timely manner. Please be sure to notify the school office if there are any changes in your emergency contact information, especially telephone numbers.

We continue to welcome volunteers to our school and appreciate your willingness to help. Please remember that all volunteers must complete the BCPS Volunteer Training. The Volunteer Training is available at . Click on the turquoise tab towards the top of the page marked "Community." Click on the "Community" tab and scroll down to "Volunteer with BCPS." The information about completing the application, viewing the video, and printing the certificate can all be found on this site. If you do not have access to a computer and/or printer, please call the school office at (410) 887-7663 and we will make arrangements for you to come into school to complete the volunteer training and print your certificate. The volunteer training is required of every volunteer including participating in or attending field trips, class celebrations and programs, assemblies, etc.

On September 23rd we kicked-off our 2016-2017 reading incentive program, "Reading through the Decades." I hope that your children are working on completing their reading, and logging their steps (minutes) on their recording sheet as they read through the first

decade, "The 1960s!" We appreciate your support in encouraging your children to participate in the program and help us celebrate our 50th anniversary theme as we gear up for our school-wide anniversary celebration on April 25, 2017!

Please mark your calendars for our annual Halloween Parade on October 31st at 2:00 PM. As many of you know, the Halloween Parade at Pinewood is a time honored tradition that dates back many years! It is a festive event where teachers and students have the opportunity to dress up, if they choose, and parade through the school building and campus. We welcome parents and family members to join us outside as the students and staff march in the parade.

I also want to thank the PTA for their tremendous support and enthusiasm in welcoming me to Pinewood and for providing activities and resources for our school community. For example, the PTA sponsored a "Fire & Ice" social for Kindergarten students and their families on September 9th and coordinated a "Family Movie Night" on September 30th. In addition, they have set up a program of teacher grants to provide financial resources to teachers to purchase materials and resources to enrich their academic program. If you are already a member of the Pinewood PTA, thank you for your support. If you are not a member, please consider joining the PTA. Again, please call the front office for more information or go online to .

Please join me in welcoming our new staff members: Kindergarten - Shirlene Moore Grade 3 - Erin Paquette School Nurse - Jody Lederman Special Education Teacher - Kelly Schnitzker STAT Teacher - Tricia Turnbull-George Psychologist - Lynne Tarakan Physical Education - Kathleen Bryant Spanish Teacher - Emile Martinez Reading Specialist - Gail Cecchetti ESOL Teacher - Karen Hare

Pinewood News Welcome back to another school year! Hopefully it will be full of new and exciting

experiences! I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself, my name is Kristen Matthew and I am new to Pinewood Elementary this year as the School Counselor!

One of the wonderful opportunities your child will have this school year will be to receive regular guidance lessons in his/her classroom. During the month of September, I visited classrooms, introduced myself, and shared what my role as the School Counselor is.

I look forward to offering support to the students, staff, families and community! I can be reached by email at kmatthew@ or by phone at 410-887-7663.

Thank you! Kristen Matthew
