Simley High School Golf - Home

Simley Golf Virtual VanWeek 1From KyleAs most of you know, I love music. I shared earlier this season that one of the things I have been doing in my free time during this pandemic is to listen to one album each day. While I have enjoyed this very much, it is not the same as the joy I experience while driving the golf van. Listening to you all rock out to a favorite song or change the lyrics to make a song about golf is something I really miss. Thank goodness for Mark Kaschke. Kash had a brilliant idea to bring the golf van back to life!! Each week we will put out a six (or more) song Golf Van Playlist. All four coaches and one captain from each team will each pick one song for the list and will include a brief explanation of why they chose that song. The list is also open for anyone else to contribute. If you would like to participate to honor a teammate, recapture a memory, or just to have fun all you need to do is email either Kyle or Mark a link to the song on YouTube and an explanation of why you requested it! We hope you enjoy listening and remembering the glory and joy that is the Simley Golf Van!!!Mark’s PickNo Retreat No Surrender” – The Boss: back to a tradition in the Boys Van, for years we would introduce the varsity to the music of the Boss, Bruce Springsteen, because everything you need to learn in life you can find in one or another Bruce song. My first week selection to get through these times is an anthem for resiliency: "No Retreat No Surrender." When I was growing up in the 60's & 70's, my parent's generation was terrified of Rock & Roll. They thought they were scared of the long hair, Elvis Presley's hips, and the loud music. What they were really afraid of were the ideas in the songs. Springsteen captures perfectly what scared my parents about rock music in the opening lines of this song, "We busted out of class, had to get away from those fools. We learned more from a three-minute record baby than we ever learned in school!" Then he sings not only about the never quit mindset, but also about loyalty among friends & teammates.Golden’s Pick“Don’t Stop Believin’” – Journey: golf van staple, it is a song with a perfect message for tough times. Don’t stop believing! Although this song was released almost 40 years ago, the song holds up just as well as the message. No matter how you currently feel, one listen and you are bound to feel at least a little better! It also sounds great (ok, maybe not great) when everyone is singing it together in the van!Captain’s Pick – Anna Ahern“You’re Welcome” – from Moana: girls golf team is notorious for this song! Playing this song before every match always calmed me down and allowed me to laugh with some of my favorite people. I think everyone knew this song by heart and it was capable of putting everyone in a good mood. Putting aside the nerves of an important round of golf was almost impossible for me, but this song somehow did the trick. I will never forget the van ride sing-alongs to this song and I hope they continue in the future!? Thanks, Patty.?Captain’s Pick – Zach Sayner“Changes” – David Bowie: chose the song “Changes” by David Bowie, because this year has been very different than what we had hoped it would be. There have been many unexpected changes that we all have to unfortunately deal with, but we as a team are handling these changes well, I believe. Also, this is just an amazing song.Murph’s Pick“Eye of the Tiger” – Survivor: hasn’t never really played a significant part of my life, so when Coach Kaschke asked us coaches to pick a song to add to the Golf Van Playlist, I initially was stuck.Though our JV van didn’t exactly have the vibe of Studio 54 like the Varsity Van did, we still enjoyed our time together (do our athletes know what Studio 54 even is?). Girls didn’t fight over the role of DJ. Nobody was blamed for forgetting the aux cord. We were pretty mellow. The one song I would want to add to the Golf Van Playlist to start would be one that takes me back to my high school athlete days. “Eye of the Tiger” by Survivor is best known from the movie Rocky. But for me, it will always be known as the warm-up song for my basketball team in high school. Albert Lea’s mascot was the tiger, so it made sense. There is one line in that song that resonates with my thoughts about our amazing team:“It's the Eye of the Tiger, it's the thrill of the fightRisin' up to the challenge of our rival.”No matter the opponent, tournament, and weather conditions, Simley golf has always risen to whatever challenge they were presented with. They did so with a smile on their faces and determination in their hearts.I know this year’s golf season isn’t what we desired it to be, but yet again, our team will rise to the challenge and move forward to conquer whatever obstacles lie ahead in both golf and life.John’s Pick“Troubadour” – George Strait: 've played a lot of golf with people older than me -- this song illustrates two things in connection?to that. First: my older friends telling stories of their younger days -- life, golf or business -- and, soon enough, I will be the old troubadour doing the same. Second: those old troubadours with whom you may be paired, who may not hit it as far as you, are there to grind and should not be taken lightly. While they may be shorter off the tee, their experience from 150 yards and in is deadly.? ................
