The ideal introduction history of western philosophy: An illuminating discourse on the major thinkers, from Plato to Descartes to Nietzsche.

A small marvel, A Beginner's Guide to Philosophy provides an instructive and delightful introduction to philosophy. Despite its brevity, this beginner's guide covers a vast range of authors and topics. The reader will find discussions of ancient and modern philosophy, beginning with the pre-Socratic thinkers, before moving on to Plato and Aristotle. The narrative then proceeds to an elegant survey of modern philosophers: Descartes, Nietzche, Kant, and Hegel.

At the end of this poignant yet practical intellectual journey, Dominique Janicaud at last addresses the problems that have occupied thinkers through the ages: the existence of God, the meaning of life, human nature, and the question of freedom. q Sales Rank: #927073 in Books q Published on: 2010-02-15 q Original language: English q Number of items: 1 q Dimensions: .82" h x .4" w x .55" l, .35 pounds q Binding: Paperback q 128 pages

A superb primary text perfect for self-directed study By Midwest Book Review French philosopher Dominique Janicaud presents A Beginner's Guide to Philosophy, which introduces readers to the basics of Western philosophy. From the stylings of pre-Socratic thinkers to the work of Plato and Aristotle, to an overview of more modern philosophers such as Descartes, Nietzsche, Kant, and Hegel, A Beginner's Guide to Philosophy touches upon the quandaries that have hounded thinkers throughout history: the existence of God, the meaning of life, human nature, and the question of what true freedom is. "If not all acts are free in the same way, should freedom itself depend on the degree of enlightenment it brings? Or is every man essentially free in so far as he is a man? If this is the case, we must not simply identify the capacity for being free with the enactment of freedom. We still don't know how freedom can be made concrete in the world." Accessible to readers of all backgrounds, A Beginner's Guide to Philosophy is a superb primary text perfect for self-directed study.

By Doug Erlandson As someone who has devoted four decades of his adult life to either teaching or studying philosophy (or both), I was skeptical when a publisher sent me this little book entitled "A Beginner's Guide to Philosophy." How could anyone provide an adequate overview of philosophy in 30 short snippets that come to just over 100 pages of text?

When I began reading I soon discovered that Dominique Janicaud had done precisely that. Written originally for his 20-year-old daughter (and translated into English by Lisabeth During), "A Beginner's Guide" truly lays the foundation for reasoning philosophically and shows why this is important. Along the way Janicaud briefly describes some of the main ideas of philosophers as diverse as Socrates, Heraclitus, Aristotle, Descartes, Leibniz, Kant, Hegel, Schopenhauer, and Heidegger. Needless to say, in such a short book, there are some important figures that have gone missing, such as Aquinas and Wittgenstein. But the reader will come away from this book with at least a glimpse into what some major philosophers have thought and why they have thought the way they have.

However, what is most beneficial in this book is not the philosophical date it provides (which is admittedly sketchy) but the love for philosophy that shines through and the raising of the questions that philosophers have asked since the time of the ancient Greeks (as well as why these questions are truly important). If this book inculcates a love of philosophical thought and a desire to learn more in one individual, it will have been worth the effort.

It's Okay By JAK Gracefully and pleasantly written, I didn't think this book said much. It's not really an introduction to philosophy. It's a meditation of sorts by the author on why philosophy matters .I enjoyed some of his comments on the impenetrable ( for me) Hegel. If you read this you will probably enjoy it.However if you don't , you aren't missing much.
